Citizen Journalists Changing World

As a journalism school graduate who spent much of the past quarter-century working closely with those in the Fourth Estate, I’m fascinated with the opportunities afforded ordinary citizens by new media and technology. That in mind, I read several articles today on what’s being called “citizen journalism” and surprised myself with what I found.

Topics ranged from governments that fear citizen journalists (see the IDG News Service article about a new French law that prohibits ordinary citizens from reporting on acts of violence) to large newspapers — that is, the newly revamped USAToday.com — denying any embrace of citizen journalism by telling AdAge.com saying, “The idea is for its reporters to learn from readers and then do the journalism itself professionally.”

I even found CyberJournalist.net, a web site that’s attempting to keep up with the explosive growth of what it terms “citizen media initiatives.”

If you’re one of the estimated millions of people worldwide who fashions himself as a citizen journalist or aspires to that moniker, Bob McCarty Writes recommends you outfit yourself appropriately with one of the high-quality Citizen Journalist items available at The Bob McCarty Shop.
