10-Year Battle Ends, Criminal to be Deported

April 12th, 2007 · No Comments

Today, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit in St. Louis published an opinion denying Vong Xiong, a 29-year-old citizen of Laos who became a lawful permanent U.S. resident in 1993, the right to remain in the United States after committing a “particularly serious crime” in October 1997. Xiong was convicted of third-degree criminal sexual assault against a victim who, at the time, was only 14 years old.

As the Courts’ published opinion shows, this should, for the most part, be hailed as a victory for justice and for the American people. The “in part” wording stems from the fact that it took this case 10 years to make it to this point in the legal system.
