Putin Strangling Freedom, Democracy in Russia

April 15th, 2007 · 1 Comment

Three days ago under a Bob McCarty Writes post, Multimillionaire Plotting Overthrow of Putin, I reminded you of the threat posed by Russian President Vladimir Putin and his increasingly dictatorial approach to governing the former Soviet state. Today, I bring you more bad news.

Freedom in Russian image

On Sunday, according to a Reuters article, Putin ordered riot police to beat anti-Kremlin demonstrators in the tourist heart of St. Petersburg. That came one day after police snuffed out a similar protest in Moscow. The Moscow march, Associated Press reported today, involved a coalition of opposition groups protesting the economic and social policies of Putin as well as a series of Kremlin actions that critics say has stripped Russians of many political rights.

“It is no longer a country … where the government tries to pretend it is playing by the letter and spirit of the law,” said Gary Kasparov, former world chess champion who, along with 150 others, was detained by police and later released. “We now stand somewhere between Belarus and Zimbabwe,” two dictatorships that have cracked down on opposition.

Again, I repeat what I’ve said to readers of this blog in past posts: If you know someone with ties to Russia or another former Soviet-block nation who is dedicated to seeing freedom and democracy overcome dictator Putin’s ever-increasing tyranny, send them one of our designs printed on a t-shirt or bumper sticker and help promote freedom and democracy around the world!

The design above says, “Freedom! Freedom! Freedom!” in Russian. Also available is a design with the words, “Demand Freedom!” in Russian. Click here or on the image above to see everything available.
