Thank you for publishing your fathers stories. I used to read old hickory 30th division. I live in one of these small towns. Uebach-Palenberg is its name. Setterich and Immendorf are our neighbors. I am an American that married a German and have always been a history buff. I found some maps from the 19 corps that they used when they crossed the border at Rimberg which is almost in my back yard on the river Wurm. It shows all the pillboxes and I have located at least 8 of them, I do this in the fall because with all the vegetation it is hard to detect them, but most are still around but they are blown up. I still see where the foxholes were in the hills overlooking the border in the Rimbergwald. When I first read part one, I knew that it was my area, I think that the chaulk area was in Holland near Valkenberg, there are alot of chaulk hills there. It is so interesting to read this history and I thank you again for sharing it with us. It really made my day.

I singled out your Dad's World War II experience and read all twelve. The caliber of men, then in their mid & perhaps late teens , some younger and some in their early 20's were/are the greatest generation ever. ever, saving that Continent for the second time - how can we ever thank them or forget them. Came home and started American's Industrial Revolution, some never talked about their experience until Brocaw's book. What an enduring legacy they left all of us.

Bob,
Thanks so much for sharing your dad's writings. My father (Glendon L. Umbaugh) was in the 102nd, 405th Regiment, so he was right beside your dad in these battles. Only recently have I sought this information, and your dad's stories are fascinating to me. Dad died nine years ago, and I regret not asking him to recount these times. Does make our current lives look pretty trivial, doesn't it?
