In the headline of a Bob McCarty Writes™ post May 3, I raised this question:
Will Liberals View Terrorism, TB in Similar Way?
Today, it seems officials at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta are one step closer to having to answer that question.
At 2 p.m. Eastern today, CDC officials held a press conference to discuss the steps CDC is taking in response to a case of extensively drug-resistant tuberculosis (XDR TB) in a U.S. citizen who undertook international travel. In short, they’re trying to notify all passengers who may have traveled with him aboard Air France 385 from Atlanta to Paris May 13 and back to the United States on Czech Air Flight 0104 May 24.
Like all forms of tuberculosis, XDR TB is a disease caused by germs that are spread person-to-person through the air, according to the CDC. In this case, the infected patient traveled on two trans-Atlantic air flights and in doing so, may have exposed passengers and crew to XDR TB. A federal quarantine order has been issued and CDC is currently collaborating with U.S. state and local health departments, international ministries of health, the airline industry and the World Health Organization.
According to Dr. Julie Gerberding, CDC director, the agency hasn’t been involved in such an action since 1963.
Stay tuned.

Interesting how you raised the question before it happened. As a liberal, I have no issue with the quarantine. The guy knew he was infected; he should not have put others at risk for his own selfish needs.

Angie — It is interesting how I raised the question in advance. In reality, the NY Times article cited in the post played a role in me writing that post. I agree with your statements. Thanks for posting. — Bob

One man with TB, several airplanes, many contacts
The Center for Disease Control (CDC) has a big problem on their hands with a tuberculosis (TB) scare. Silly man decides to travel the world while spreading his germs. Obviously not a rocket scientist, now the CDC is tracking down

I have to say that when I think rationally about the situation, we’re really only talking about 1 person with TB. In a video, the Dean of the UCLA School of Public Health mentions that 9 million people are still infected with TB each year and that over 1 million die. She goes on to say that she feels that the risk of infection to others is probably pretty low.
Having said that though, I think if I were a passenger sitting next to this guy, I’d be pretty upset!
