Warming Not Worth Wrestling, NASA Boss Says

May 31st, 2007 · 8 Comments

“I have no doubt that a trend of global warming exists,” said NASA administrator Michael Griffin, speaking to National Public Radio’s Steve Inskeep on today’s Morning Edition program. “I am not sure that it is fair to say that it is a problem we must wrestle with.”

Translation: The Al Gore-spearheaded effort aimed at scaring people and governments into drastically changing their ways based on often-shaky grounds (a.k.a., consensus science) is better described as GLOBULL WARMING.

Have you read Michael Griffin’s bio?

    http://www.nasa.gov/about/highlights/griffin_bio.html

“Nominated by President George W. Bush”

That’s suspect right there, but this seals it…

“Griffin received a bachelor’s degree in Physics from Johns Hopkins University; a master’s degree in aerospace science from Catholic University of America; a Ph.D. in aerospace engineering from the University of Maryland; a master’s degree in electrical engineering from the University of Southern California; a master’s degree in applied physics from Johns Hopkins University; a master’s degree in business administration from Loyola College; and a master’s degree in Civil Engineering from George Washington University.”

He is not an environmental scientist. The environmental scientists at NASA disagree with his pronouncements.

Why do you choose to believe him over the people who actually know about environmental science?

Joe — Aside from your lame guilt-by-association-with-Bush point, you say, “The environmental scientists at NASA disagree with his pronouncements.” Before you paint them all with the same brush, look up ROY SPENCER, a principal research scientist at the University of Alabama in Huntsville and former NASA scientist. ~ In a Huntsville Times article April 19, 2007, he said he knows he’s in the minority with his opinions, but he doesn’t believe manmade influences are causing catastrophic climate changes. ~ As for your “why?” question, here’s my answer: I think for myself and don’t let Al Gore and people of his ilk sway me with their decidedly-shaky consensus science. ~ Thanks for posting. — Bob

You think for yourself so you use the minority opinion of an engineer to support your opinion against the vast majority of environmental scientists?

I wouldn’t listen to Al Gore on environmental science if he contradicted the scientific consensus. I don’t know if he has or not, because I haven’t seen his movie.

Joe — I always think for myself, and I do it based on FACTS rather than “bandwagon” propaganda. You ought to try it; it’s liberating! Thanks for posting. — Bob

You define agreeing with the consensus of scientists in the field as “band wagoning”?

Ok, perhaps we should look at what the man said:

“I have no doubt that a trend of global warming exists,” Griffin told Inskeep. “I am not sure that it is fair to say that it is a problem we must wrestle with.”

So global warming is happening. I agree with him there. We don’t have to do anything about it I suppose, but we might want to.

“To assume that it is a problem is to assume that the state of Earth’s climate today is the optimal climate, the best climate that we could have or ever have had and that we need to take steps to make sure that it doesn’t change,”

Or maybe we want to keep our coastal cities above seawater, want to maintain our food supply and not have to relocate and change food crops for all the farms on the planet that depend on their local climate to determine what they can grow.

There is nothing “optimal” about the current global environment we live in except that it happens to be the one we live in. It is the environment that our agriculture, transportation and energy infrastructure, and general way of life is built around. Changing it drastically in a very short period would change a lot of these things drastically in a short period. This would require a lot of resources to correct and would endanger many lives and the stability of our technological infrastructure.

“I guess I would ask which human beings — where and when — are to be accorded the privilege of deciding that this particular climate that we have right here today, right now is the best climate for all other human beings. I think that’s a rather arrogant position for people to take.”

Well maybe the ones that are most probably responsible for changing it should stand up and take responsibility for maintaining it for the rest of life on this Earth to live in.

Like it or not, buy ascending to a massive level of environmental influence we have appointed ourselves as stewards of the Earth. We need to take this position seriously.

Joe — We’re going to have to agree to disagree on this one. You believe global warming is caused by man and can be corrected by man. I’m not convinced it exists and, if it does, that man can do anything significant to change it. Thanks for posting. — Bob
