Cow Flatulence Fix Could Save Taxpayers $20 Million

June 28th, 2007 · No Comments

An article published yesterday on the web site of WETM-TV in Elmira, N.Y., began with these words:

You can definitely smell it, but you can’t see it.

One might think the writer was referring to political deals being hashed out behind closed doors in the nation’s capitol. Alas, that’s not the case. The invisible aromas described later in the article are those associated with cow manure (a.k.a., “cow chips,” “cow patties” or just plain “poop”).

Under the headline, How Farm Odors Contribute to Global Warming: New Research Happening in NYS, the article explains that the United States Department of Agriculture has released reports stating that when you smell cow manure, you’re also smelling greenhouse gas emissions.

Additionally, the article explains that your federal government — specifically, Congress — has authorized $20 million be spent to fund “51 research projects across the country designed to refine new technologies helping dairy and other agricultural producers cut back on their greenhouse emissions and cash in on governmental incentives for the research.”

I have a better idea: Give the cows Beano® tablets twice a day.

It’s an economical solution for Dave Boor, the farmer mentioned in the article as saying his small, 100-cow operation in Horseheads, N.Y., is hit hard every year with costly environmental regulations he has a hard time affording. For less than 25 cents per day, he can provide each of his cows with two Beano® tablets each and still have some for personal use. Plus, if he buys in bulk, he can probably do it for less!

And what happens when other cattle operators follow Boor’s lead? We make a big dent in the nation’s so-called “greenhouse gas” problem, everyone breaths a little easier and American taxpayers save $20 million.
