Federal ‘Hate Crime’ Legislation Threatens Freedoms (Updated)

June 28th, 2007 · 5 Comments

Overshadowed by the attention paid to immigration-reform legislation in recent months, another piece of freedom-threatening legislation is quietly making its way through Congress and, in fact, has already been passed by the House. The legislation has to do with the prevention of so-called “Hate Crimes”.

In this video below, Rep. Mary Fallin (R-Okla.), a first-term Republican representing Oklahoma’s 5th Congressional District, explains the pitfalls of this misguided legislation to her colleagues on the House floor:  [Update 4/24/09: Unfortunately, the original video of Representative Fallin's speech was removed from YouTube, so I replaced it in the link at the beginning of this paragraph.]

If you value your freedom of speech and freedom of religious expression, click on the “Don’t Make Me A Criminal!” poster below and take action as directed. [Update 4/24/09: Unfortunately, the link that was on the poster now directs people to a Viagra ad, so I disabled it.]

Be sure to read Section 8 of the version passed by the House:

    SEC. 8. RULE OF CONSTRUCTION.

Nothing in this Act, or the amendments made by this Act, shall be construed to prohibit any expressive conduct protected from legal prohibition by, or any activities protected by the free speech or free exercise clauses of, the First Amendment to the Constitution.

Passed the House of Representatives May 3, 2007.

Antony — Yes, it’s there, but the same language isn’t in the Senate version…and another thing: Until people like you prove to me there is a need for legislation like this that places violent crimes into a hierarchy of sorts, I’ll vehemently oppose it. All you’re trying to do is silence people who don’t share your views. — Bob
