“Walkin’ on the Fightin’ Side of Me” Still Rings True

July 4th, 2007 · 5 Comments

I happened to be flipping through the channels this afternoon and saw a program of patriotic songs was airing on Country Music Television. One of the program’s featured songs, Walkin’ on the Fightin’ Side of Me, had been a giant hit for Merle Haggard during the Vietnam War. Today, despite being nearly 40 years old, I think the words of this song still ring true for many Americans today.

The video below adds a montage of images that help to update the message contained in the song. Watch, listen and see if you agree with me on this Independence Day 2007.

The lyrics of Walkin’ on the Fightin’ Side of Me appear below:

I hear people talkin’ bad,
About the way we have to live here in this country,
Harpin’ on the wars we fight,
An’ gripin’ ’bout the way things oughta be.

An’ I don’t mind ‘em switchin’ sides,
An’ standin’ up for things they believe in.
When they’re runnin’ down my country, man,
They’re walkin’ on the fightin’ side of me.

Yeah, walkin’ on the fightin’ side of me.
Runnin’ down the way of life,
Our fightin’ men have fought and died to keep.
If you don’t love it, leave it:
Let this song I’m singin’ be a warnin’.
If you’re runnin’ down my country, man,
You’re walkin’ on the fightin’ side of me.

I read about some squirrely guy,
Who claims, he just don’t believe in fightin’.
An’ I wonder just how long,
The rest of us can count on bein’ free.

They love our milk an’ honey,
But they preach about some other way of livin’.
When they’re runnin’ down my country, hoss,
They’re walkin’ on the fightin’ side of me.

“My country right or wrong” was just the attitude expressed by the Germans in the years leading up to and including World War II (see the diary entries by Capt. Wilm Hosenfeld in The Pianist). Such attitudes as yours are a betrayal of the country, not evidence of the patriotism you claim. You don’t know the true meaning of the word “Freedom” or how truly to uphold the freedoms you have.

A True Patriot — I find it interesting that your e-mail address begins with “RussianBureaucrat@”. I won’t give the rest of your e-mail address here, but I will answer your final post on this blog with one word — “Nyet!” (That’s Russian for “No!”). — Bob
