Sixteen years ago today, the Soviet Union was transformed into a federation of free nations and literally disappeared from the maps of the world. Unfortunately, Russian President Vladimir Putin seems to have put the “vehicle” that is the United States’ former Cold War adversary in reverse and, in so doing, threatens to resurrect the Soviet Bear.
In addition to nibbling and chopping away at individual freedoms in his country, Putin has tightened controls on the news media, launched initiatives to rewrite (a.k.a. “whitewash”) Russian history texts and is rebuilding the Russian military. On the latter, Russia recently conducted military training exercises with China and resumed the Cold War-style practice of sending Russian bomber aircraft on long-range mission that often include provocative overflights of the sovereign airspace of other countries.
Those who like to keep an eye on the former Soviet Union will appreciate a well-written editorial, Demanding Justice in Georgia, by the folks at La Russophobe, a blog that touts itself as “the #1 English-language Russia politics blog in the world”. The piece begins this way:
A monstrous horror is unfolding before our eyes in the former Soviet republic of Georgia, now struggling to become a member of the democratic fraternity of nations and to free itself from decades of Russian-Soviet oppression. How the West responds to this challenge will decide in large part the way in which our children and theirs will live their lives. We must not fail them, as we have done before.
