The video is titled ‘Barack Obama 2008 spokenword.’ Muslims Against Sharia call on Barack Obama to distance himself from his extremist supporters and to denounce this You Tube video for promoting violence in the name of the Obama for President campaign.

By failing to put his hand over his heart, he fails at satisfying even the basics.

   This kind of obfuscation, smearing and name-calling seems to be part and parcel of American politics, much to the detriment of the debate of real issues.

   By the way, I’m certain that none of my American friends (I have around 10 I know well enough to say this of) would list ‘God, country, self’ as “the basics of being American”. Besides, correct me if I’m wrong, but aren’t the church and state rigorously separated in the US?

17. I have to say that I agree with most of everything said and yet I disagree. As far as the politics the commander and chiefs first responsibility is to defend and respect the constitution of the United States of America. This means he SHOULD respect the flag. However great men and women have died to defends one’s right to disrespect the Flag and although I think these people to be ignorant. I believe in their right to freedom of speech. That is what makes this country great. But on a personal vote patriotism is the most important quality in a US presidential candidate and with that said Obama will not get my vote!

23. Sorry, Greg, but HotoffthePress2 was correct in the spelling of “it’s.” This is a contraction of the words, “it is.” The contraction requires an apostrophe. You shouldn’t use derogatory terms because it reflects on your critical thinking abilities.

24. First off, whether that photo appeared in the online version of Time Magazine or not, it’s obviously a fake, or at least was shot with a highly distorting lens. (Lest you think a major magazine wouldn’t print a fake photo, you might want to read “Faking images in photojournalism” at http://commfaculty.fullerton.edu/lester/writings/faking.html). Most obviously, notice that the flag in the background is nearly the same height on the left as on the right, whereas the corresponding chairs are about three quarters to two-thirds height, and Ruth Harkin on the far right is half the height of Obama. These proportions don’t add up.

    And if it is real, either Gov. Bill Richardson is failing to look at a flag we’re presuming is to their right (possibly so he can look at the camera), or he’s the only one who is facing the flag, unless there’s flags all over the place, which would make it rather confusing as to what you were supposed to do.

    Next, United States Code, Title 36, Chapter 10 – Patriotic Customs does not require people in civilian garb to put their hand over their heart. If you’re a Muslim, Jew, Jehovah’s Witness or Christian, you might want to thank God it doesn’t! Forcing someone to show subservience to a symbol is forbidden by the Ten Commandments. Refusing to do so was the reason Daniel was thrown to the lions, and also why Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego were thrown into the fiery furnace, according to the Biblical book of Daniel. The Bible says that God delivered them all because God didn’t want His people being forced to do such things. Mordecai’s refusal to bow before an official who represented an idol-worshipping culture was the reason all the Jews were ordered to be executed, until they thankfully were saved by the potentially suicidal actions of Esther. Suggesting someone put their hand over their heart is one thing–requiring it is, according to the Bible, an abomination before God.

    Besides that, as a Boy Scout I was taught that it was equally respectful to have your hands and arms down during the pledge, which is according to United States tradition if not the current version of the code. And during what can be called one of the most patriotic times in all of American history, World War II, the Supreme Court declared that requiring students to salute the flag was unconstitutional (West Virginia State Board of Education v. Barnette (1943)).

    Finally, you might want to know that the most common form of the salute is relatively new, not some long-standing tradition. The more traditional salute is called the Bellamy salute, named after Francis Bellamy, the man most-often credited with creating both the salute and the Pledge of Allegiance. To perform this more traditional salute, you should raise your right arm up at an angle with your palm facing downward. This began to be replaced by the hand-over-the-heart salute in the 1940s, although the change was resisted by some traditionally-patriotic American groups such as the Daughters of the American Revolution. If you want to be a truly Patriotic American, you should use the Bellamy salute–which looks virtually identical to the salute used by the German Nazis.

    Your conspiracy-theory thinking about the photo being fake is laughable.

    To say that putting one’s hand over his heart during the national anthem is an abomination before God is insane.

    As for saluting, please save us all the revisionist history lesson. I served as an Air Force officer and learned plenty about the salute.

    The most important thing about this year’s election is this: Neither Democrat is qualified to serve as commander in chief of the Armed Forces.

26. None of them are facing the flag which is required according to Title 36, Chapter 10 – Patriotic Customs. As for the right hand to left shoulder, they passed not needing to do that due to religious beliefs. “One hand under ‘God’” So I don’t see him in the wrong at all.

They’re being investigated in Texas for polygamy and sexual child abuse. And Miley Cyrus is NOT a member of Rev. Loveshade’s group, even though he tried to get her to join his “Discordian” group. She’s a good Christian girl who was tricked into posing half-naked. If she joins Reverend Loveshade now it will be in prison!

30. Obama’s words are about unity. Given his lack of specifics, one must equate his words as symbolism for his cause.

    The Flag happens to be the most important form of a country’s symbolism. You don’t write on it, let it touch the ground, et cetera, et cetera.

    What was in Obama’s mind when he opted to stand there like that? They may not be staring AT that flag, but three of the four do the hand-over-chest salute. Obama simply stands there in a nondescript defiance. I think it’s fair to ask “Why?”.

    I think Obama needs to explain himself and convince the American people, not with loose and nice sounding words but with substance and true meaning.
