After South Carolina Democrat Party officials got wind of allegations of wrongdoing by the presidential campaign of Stephen Colbert, they voted 13-3 yesterday to keep the comedian off the ballot.
In a Tuesday post, Did Stephen Colbert Hire Illegal Aliens?, I published details of how, according to anonymous staffers inside Colbert’s fledgling campaign, the Comedy Central show host’s campaign was being investigated by Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Those allegations included the following:
- Colbert secretly hired hundreds of illegal immigrants from Mexico to make so-called “get out the vote” phone calls to likely voters in South Carolina; and
- In exchange for working up to 20 hours a day in the sweatshop-like conditions of a suburban Charleston call center, Colbert paid his campaign’s “south of the border” staffers with bags of Doritos® Brand Tortilla Chips, the corporate sponsor of his presidential campaign effort.
Repeated attempts — including a post on his blog this morning — to reach representatives of the Colbert campaign for comment on this issue have been unsuccessful. That leaves us to wonder whether or not Colbert will wage a write-in campaign.
