So what does IT mean for Barry Bonds and for Major League Baseball? Plenty!
In this case, “IT” represents the news that broke last night about Bonds’ indictment on allegations of perjury and obstruction of justice. Apparently, the man who set MLB’s career home run record last season told members of the grand jury he did not use performance-enhancing drugs (i.e., steroids), and they didn’t believe him.
IT means that Bonds, who is now without a team after the San Francisco Giants opted not to sign the slugger to a new contract, faces the possibility of 30 years in jail if found guilty on the charges, according to one news report.
In addition, IT means Bonds’ home run record and other career records are at risk of being expunged or, at a minimum, having asterisks placed next to them in the record books.
Perhaps most significantly, IT means Bonds might never be inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, N.Y.
Any way you slice IT, IT‘s a sad day for Major League Baseball and IT‘s fans.
