Another effort to “dum down” the American political process took place this weekend as the focus of the 2008 presidential race was upon the opinion of a daytime television talk show host, Oprah Winfrey (a.ka., “Oprah”).
Oprah took center stage this weekend when she entered the world of presidential politics for the first time and endorsed the candidacy of Barack Obama. After announcing her endorsement, she campaigned with him in Iowa, New Hampshire and South Carolina.
Not surprisingly, Oprah’s endorsement generated a great deal of media interest and campaign trail excitement, including what is expected to be a largest-ever campaign rally crowd later today in South Carolina. The key question now, however, is whether her endorsement — and the so-called “Oprah Effect” — will translate into additional votes for the first-term Democrat senator from Illinois.
If the opinion of a woman who makes her millions by interviewing celebrities, endorsing the works of authors and exploiting “human interest” stories for ratings on daytime television, I think we’ll be able to confirm, once and for all, that this effort to “dum down” American politics was successful.
