Tre Merrit, a 5-year-old Arkansas boy, gained 15 minutes of fame recently after being credited with shooting and killing a 440-pound Black Bear while on a hunting trip with his grandfather.
As soon as they catch wind of the boy’s exploits, animal rights activists will likely come out of the woodwork and cause a stir by condemning the boy’s father and grandfather for teaching him how to hunt and handle firearms.
Regardless of how big a “stink” they cause, however, it will pale in comparison to what might have happened if the boy had shot MOHAMMED THE BEAR. If you’re not familiar with the story behind that reference, click here for some background.

Tre Merrit with your family. We are in this together that, young man. includes saving black bears as well as all of God’s creatures here on Earth, that includes you as well, Tre Merrit.

All of my relatives live in Oklahoma and Tennessee. That is the culture of those folks down there. I am an animal activist. They have no voice.
9 hotoffthepress2 // Dec 11, 2007 at 10:44 pm
Sunny — Chief Seattle? I thought the Chiefs were in Kansas City.
10 hotoffthepress2 // Dec 11, 2007 at 10:45 pm
Sunny — I was born and raised in Oklahoma. I’m only an animal activist when I take the dog for a walk. Then, we’re both active. Hope you get your voice back. Try honey. They say it helps.

A five year old shoots a gun, and kills for the fun of it (since don’t eat bears, what you gonna do with that dead bear? well…) and he does this with the approval of his parents, grandparents and at least some of the media. Then he gets famous for it. What a place, what a culture, what a stupid, mindless bunch of people. This is worse than madness, and it is worse than disgusting.
12 hotoffthepress2 // Dec 12, 2007 at 7:15 am

What a bunch of incredible sick and ignorant morons, as stupid and sick as they come. I am convinced that lowlifesas these who take pride and pleasure in destroying a beautiful and proud animal that is minding its own business are seriously sick and disturbed to the bone. Teaching a child that this animal is there just for the sick “pleasure” of killing it these degenerated misfits rather then observing it and showing the child how beautiful wildlife is, is something that these bastards not even think about. Stupid wildlife rapists with their guns and pathetic outfits!! I’d wish they more often shoot each other. I consider this the most disgusting, ignorant, cruel, self centered and selfish creatures on the face of the planet !!

Eric — I glean several pieces of data out of your post:
First, it appears you have a lot of pent up stress and anger in you, so I suggest you release some of that tension with a weekend spent hunting in the great outdoors;
Second, it appears you’ve succumbed entirely to animal rights activism and political correctness; and
Finally, if you hunt the same way you post comments, you’d never make it as a hunter (e.g., you seem to fire your “weapon” before loading it with ammo).
P.S. When I move my mouse over your name, I see you’re linked to “Hutingissick.com”. What is “huting”?

It is remarkable this young child killed abear. However, what was the purpose of doing so? Will the bear be used as food; his fur for clothing; his organs for medical research, etc. If the answer is no, then what a waste of natural animal life, and what a waste teaching this young child that wasting natural animal life is okay.
18 blueknight // Dec 12, 2007 at 4:39 pm
After seeing so many school shootings in the past 2 weeks this father is teaching his 5 year old son how to shoot and kill a bear. Why. It was not in self defense. This young boy is not a hero. He is a juvenile delinquent and the father is an idiot. It’s very sad news to read.
19 hotoffthepress2 // Dec 12, 2007 at 4:45 pm
To all who rant against people hunting bears, I say this: “I’d rather a 5-year-old spend time learning responsible gun ownership/hunting than spend time with people railing against it. It is, after all, a Constitutional right to BEAR arms.”
20 Mia // Dec 13, 2007 at 4:55 pm
Give the bears guns. What kind of parent teaches a 5 year old to kill? Actually, according to the news story that baby has been shooting deer since he was around 3 years old. That is the age children learn about compassion. Instead he is being taught to kill. He will have no problem killing a friend in school over a crayon, good job mom and dad.
21 hotoffthepress2 // Dec 13, 2007 at 5:00 pm
Mia — Children can also be taught discipline and responsibility at a young age. Heck, I learned to hit people — and hit ‘em hard — when I was as young as 8 years old. I was taught not to show remorse about it, too. In other words, I was taught how to play football, and I turned out okay.
22 Mia // Dec 13, 2007 at 5:11 pm
There are many other meaningful alternatives to teaching responsibility and discipline besides killing animals. It is not responsible to have a toddler handling firearms. They are not capable of sound reasoning. That is why parents that leave guns in the home accessible to children are breaking the law. Not to mention I doubt the toddler (who started killing deer at age 2.5 years old) was legally old enough to be permitted to shoot a weapon, even with adult supervision. I am not entirely sure of what the law in Arkansaw is but I seriously doubt that arming toddlers is ok, and it shouldn’t be. Obviously, like with everything, now there will have to be more laws made to interven in situations where simple common sense should prevail.
23 hotoffthepress2 // Dec 13, 2007 at 5:16 pm
Mia — Life is different in Rural America than it is where you probably grew up. While I wouldn’t take a 3 year old hunting, I’m not about to tell someone else they can’t. And, as for more laws having to be made, I think you’re nuts! We have too many laws already. But thanks for your comments.
24 Mia // Dec 13, 2007 at 5:21 pm
Also, I belive in the rights of citizens to bear arms and to do so responsibly. I have no problem with legal hunting in this country. I do not hunt as it goes against my nature but I do not condemn those that do in a humane legal way.
As sad as it is, hunting actually has a positive side. It thins deer herds taking the pressure off food resources so that they don’t all starve in the winter months. Hunting supports some wildlife programs that are important. But, babies should not be running around with guns.
25 Mia // Dec 13, 2007 at 5:24 pm
Born and raised in Wisconsin, on a large ranch. Deer hunting is a very popular sport there.
But I never saw a toddler with a gun. We had more sense.
26 hotoffthepress2 // Dec 13, 2007 at 5:31 pm
Mia — We’ll have to agree to disagree on some points. Take care!
27 Mia // Dec 13, 2007 at 5:37 pm
Also, yes black bears are protected in some areas as the above poster mentioned.
quoted from defenders.org web site - experts on the subject of wildlife science based conservation.
It is estimated that there are at least 600,000 black bears in North America. In the United States, there are estimated to be over 300,000 individuals. However, the Louisiana black bear (Ursus americanus luteolu) and Florida black bear (Ursus americanus floridanus) are threatened subspecies with small populations (see Status/Protection).
28 hotoffthepress2 // Dec 13, 2007 at 5:40 pm
Mia — I can “bear” no more and will have to conclude that I guess this issue “bears” watching. Until next time, I recommend we all just grin and “bear” it.
29 Mia // Dec 13, 2007 at 5:41 pm
ok, let’s do that
It is always good when people can calmly debate and share opinions like mature adults. Thank you for respecting my opinion, it’s definitely mutual.
30 Beyond disturbed! // Dec 13, 2007 at 8:58 pm
I’m disgusted with people that kill for the pleasure of watching animals die but even more disgusted with people that let a 5 year old use a gun.
31 hotoffthepress2 // Dec 13, 2007 at 9:01 pm
Yada yada yada. I think the world has had its say. Thanks all!

I think if these stupid city people dont like hunters and hunting dont buy the news paper with it on the front page. If there were no hunters the animals or wild pets as u would rather them be would over populate get sick and die out faster then any hunter could wipe them out. Also people can consume bear meat if it is cooked well. Also teaching a five year old child the proper way to handle fire arms and to teach them disipline with nature and fire arms they grow up to respect it more.IE I have 3 boys 8 and under that go moose hunting, bear, elk, deer ,coyote ,chicken, and wildboar hunting just to name a few. You give a city kid a 22 caliber rifle and the first thing they would do is shoot someone or a pet. Not my kids they get a target, rest they aim take of SAFETY and shoot . So shove all that up the tailpipe and get back to your city duties.
33 hotoffthepress2 // May 7, 2008 at 2:31 pm
Ramona — I hope your venom’s not aimed at this blogger, ’cause I didn’t grow up in the city.
34 ramona // May 20, 2008 at 10:49 pm
no just BEYOND DISTURBED, people allways think that all people shoot animals for the fun of it. Obviously this person should do more research on hunting before pointing fingers at all hunters. I think that it is remarkable that this child had the guts to do it. And at least he didnt do this to some families cat or dog. This bear wasnt a pet .
35 Dizzybubble // Oct 28, 2008 at 3:51 am
Well - all you animal hunting supporters, put yourself in the bears position. The earth is over populated with humans. How would it be if someone bigger than us all started on us with weapons we don’t understand, like cancer, and we randomly were sentenced to death for no fault of our own…. you may think you are top of the tree and can treat animal life with contempt. Remember you are also an animal. Somehow I think I am wasting my time here.
36 hotoffthepress2 // Oct 28, 2008 at 5:31 am
Dizzy — Perfect name. As far as wasting your time is concerned, you are.
