Hillary’s Future Rests on Politics of Apology

December 13th, 2007 · 1 Comment

LESS DANGEROUS THAN HILLARY CLINTONWhile the baseball world waits with anticipation for George Mitchell to report the findings of his investigation into Major League Baseball’s so-called “Steroids Scandal,” political pundits everywhere are waiting to see if Hillary Clinton’s apology to Barack Obama carries as many positives as the one Mike Huckabee made to a fellow GOP opponent yesterday. As for Hillary herself, she’s banking on it.

In case you haven’t heard, Mark Halperin of TIME’s The Page blog reported a short time ago that the former First Lady apologized to Obama on the tarmac at Reagan Airport early this morning as both were on their way to Johnston, Iowa, for The Des Moines Register Democrat Presidential Debate this afternoon.

One might expect Hillary’s campaign strategists to come up with something more original than a copycat of the effort made yesterday by Huckabee. But, alas, no. They appear to see value in the tactics of Huckabee, the former Arkansas governor-turned presidential candidate who makes a big deal out of telling the world he’s the only Republican who has taken on and defeated the Clinton Political Machine — and done it twice!

In much the same manner as Huckabee apologized within 24 hours of having raised questions about the Mormon faith of Mitt Romney, Hillary extended what she hopes will be perceived by voters — and reported as by her cronies in the news media — as an olive branch of peace to Obama.

Only time will tell whether Hillary’s strategy will work. Unfortunately, if it works as well as husband Bill’s did in past campaigns, she’ll win her party’s nomination by a landslide. She’s that dangerous.

Sleazy, insincere apologies aside, the media will eat it up immediately, since they are so invested in Hillary’s ‘inevitability’. But it doesn’t erase her 50% negative view in the eyes of American voters. And absolutely no lie she or Slick Willie tells will ever sell her to me.
