Congratulations! You just received a gift card from a friend. Handwritten on the note that accompanied the card was the following message: “To help cover the costs of your upcoming plastic surgery.”
Wait a minute! You weren’t planning to have — and didn’t think you needed — plastic surgery! Something’s rotten in Denmark!
If you’ve experienced something similar to the the situation described above, you might have been one of the first victims of medical gift card-giving gone bad.
Medical gift cards are the newest players in the gift card marketplace where Americans will spend more than $26 billion on gift cards this year, according to a WCBS report today. They can be purchased in much the same manner as other gift cards, but are being marketed as a means for people to help a friend or loved one pay for health care-related items and/or medical procedures.
Sadly, I predict their use as a pain-inflicting tool will grow exponentially. After all, this “perfect crime” appears to violate no laws (never say never) and, the cards hold oodles of potential to leave marks on the psyches of victims.
On a good note, there’s nothing to prevent the recipient of such a prank from using the medical gift card to pay for psychiatric counseling!
You heard it here first!
