Missouri Gov. Matt Blunt announced today that he would not seek a second term as the Show-Me State’s governor in 2008. The announcement (click here for video), which came as a surprise to nearly everyone inside and outside of Republican Party circles, leads me to speculate that another announcement will soon follow:
I predict Blunt, the youthful governor, former Navy officer and son of longtime Rep. Roy Blunt, will be selected as Mitt Romney’s running mate if the former Massachusetts governor wins the GOP nomination in 2008. After all, he was one of the first Republican leaders in the state to endorse Romney and campaigned aggressively on his behalf.
UPDATE: During its 11:05 p.m. Central news update, St. Louis’ KMOX radio included a Mitt Romney comment about Blunt’s announcement — something to the effect that “Blunt can walk away knowing he did a good job for the people of Missouri.”
UPDATE #2: I expand on my prediction in a post 1/23/08, Premature Presidential Prediction? Possibly.

Mitt’s nomination is kind of a far off speculation to hang a young man’s personal political future upon, but it may have merit.
