And Obama Wept
Serving as the headline of his piece published this morning at ABC News’ Political Punch blog, Jake Tapper’s words provide a hint about the story that follows:
Inspiration is nice. But some folks seem to be getting out of hand.
It’s as if Tom Daschle descended from on high saying, “Be not afraid; for behold I bring you good tidings of great joy which shall be to all the people: for there is born to you this day in the city of Chicago a Savior, who is Barack the Democrat.”
If you’re a regular reader of this blog, you know it’s a rare occasion when I find myself in agreement with a mainstream media reporter like Tapper. Though I don’t agree with everything in Tapper’s piece, I find myself in agreement with several. For instance, he quotes:
…Talking Points Memo blogger and Obama supporter Kathleen Geier who says she’s “getting increasingly weirded out by some of Obama’s supporters. On listservs I’m on, some people who should know better – hard-bitten, not-so-young cynics, even – are gushing about Barack…”;
…TIME Magazine‘s Joe Klein as saying there was “something just a wee bit creepy about the mass messianism” in Obama’s Super Tuesday speech; and
…Vanity Fair blogger James Wolcott as saying, “(p)erhaps it’s my atheism at work but I found myself increasingly wary of and resistant to the salvational fervor of the Obama campaign, the idealistic zeal divorced from any particular policy or cause and chariot-driven by pure euphoria.”
So there you have it. Things in the political arena are so upside down that I find myself in agreement — at least in part — with a mainstream media network news reporter as well as two liberal bloggers when it comes to Barack Obama.

I don’t agree. Most of that speech wasn’t messianic at all. He is the only candidate that talks about the sacrifices we will have to make in order to put the country back on the right track. He is the only candidate that tells us its going to be a long difficult journey. But that is precisely his appeal. In the debates he can counter-punch Clinton on policy. Just because Clinton puts people to sleep during her speeches with her policy talk doesn’t mean that what Obama does is wrong. Now I can’t defend weirdo supporters that take it too far, I won’t defend them. I have wanted him to run since 2004, and he is so close to the nomination. If its a revival that makes people get re-engaged in the process then im all for it.
