Today, I noticed that a post — Should ‘Official French Surrender Flag’ Be Retired? — published in May 2007 was getting more attention than usual, but I didn’t know why. Hoping to solve this minor mystery, I typed “surrender flag” into a Google search box and hit “Enter.” Next thing I knew, two images — the front and back of the Official French Surrender Flag — appeared atop the list of search results (see image below).

The post, containing images of the Official French Surrender Flag, was published soon after conservative Nicolas Sarkozy won the French presidential election, defeating Socialist candidate Segolene Royal. In it, I wrote:
“Now, because I don’t know enough about Sarkozy to carry on an intelligent conversation, I’m trying to decide whether or not to retire the Official French Surrender Flag merchandise line from The Bob McCarty Shop.”
The funniest thing about my discovery was the fact that an image of Sen. John Kerry (D-Mass.) appeared next to those of the Official French Surrender Flag.
