Having passed a thorough background investigation on my way to qualifying for a high-level security clearance and earning a commission as an Air Force officer, I’m disturbed every time I read an article about the qualifications — or lack thereof — of Democrat presidential candidates Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama to serve as commander in chief.
Yesterday, I was disturbed by just such an article, this one written by Mike Dorning and published early Sunday afternoon at The Swamp, the Chicago Tribune Washington Bureau’s blog. It began this way:
“Does Hillary Clinton believe Barack Obama is good enough to be a heartbeat away from the presidency but still a second-rate choice for commander-in-chief?”
Rather than worry about Democratic Party squabbles over which candidate appears best qualified, Dorning and other writers following the 2008 presidential race should be more concerned with addressing a more important question:
“Should individuals like Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama be allowed to seek the office of president of the United States without first passing the same type of thorough background investigations required of every military officer, including John McCain?”
Without breaking a sweat, I can raise enough concerns about both Democrats to keep a background investigator busy for years. Below are just a few:
Both Obama and Clinton are facing possible court dates. For what?
Clinton has been described by at least one member of the liberal news media as possibly the “most investigated person in the history of the Republic.” Why?
Obama admitted in his book, Dreams From My Father, to having smoked marijuana and used cocaine during his young adult years and has, more recently, been accused of being involved in similar activities — it gets worse — while serving in the Illinois legislature. Wow! (For more information, click here and here.)

Why are presidential candidates not properly vetted?

Good question, Uncle Sam.

With a Google search I haven’t found much on candidate’s security clearances; but given that Clinton and Obama both were already U.S. senators, I assume from the following that they have been subject to some investigation already (http://tinyurl.com/6qgbx6):
“A local Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) public affairs representative in Los Angeles told TruthorFiction.com that elected government officials go through a security screening process but could not go into details as to the level of investigation or the security level given to any one official in particular. “

Donna,
Have you ever heard of a candidate, elected by the people, not being allowed to take the oath of office? Or have you heard of a newly-elected president being refused access to the most-sensitive of classified materials due to a failure to pass a background investigation? Of course not. It doesn’t happen.
In fact, I suspect that I went through a more thorough background investigation to become an Air Force officer than Clinton, Obama or any other senior elected official did.
