UPDATE #3 11 a.m. Central 3/12/08: Gov. Eliot Spitzer stepped before a throng of reporters and photographers just after 10:45 a.m. Central. Flanked by his wife Silda, he apologized and said he would resign, effective March 17.
In the prepared text from which he read, he opened with words that closely mirrored those in the Gospel of Luke 12:48 which, in the New International Version, reads as follows:
“But the one who does not know and does things deserving punishment will be beaten with few blows. From everyone who has been given much, much will be demanded; and from the one who has been entrusted with much, much more will be asked.”
After his statement, Spitzer and his wife exited the room without taking questions from any member of the press.
Now, two questions surface:
1. Will Spitzer resign — or deploy the Bill Clinton/Larry Craig strategy?; and
2. Will Spitzer’s resignation become official before or after New York City’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade takes place? If the latter, will “Client #9″ use the event as an opportunity to say goodbye to all of his loyal constituents?

UPDATE #2 11:05 a.m. Central 3/11/08: The political world continues to wait for news about the expected resignation of Gov. Eliot Spitzer (D-N.Y.) following yesterday’s explosive news about his alleged involvement with an international prostitution ring. Many pundits suspect the former attorney general of New York — now referred to by many as “Client #9″ — is negotiating with Michael J. Garcia, U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York, with hopes of avoiding an ugly trial and possible jail time that might result from it.

ORIGINAL POST 3 p.m. Central 3/10/08:Early this afternoon, news broke that Gov. Eliot Spitzer (D-N.Y.) was alleged to be involved somehow with a prostitution ring. Moments ago, he did not confirm as much, but he did make a brief statement to the media about a “private matter” and is expected to resign his post as the Empire State’s chief executive sometime around 7 p.m. Eastern.
Fox News Channel’s Shepard Smith, Greta Van Sustern and others are falling all over themselves this afternoon as they attempt to pin down facts and determine what exactly awaits the former New York attorney general as the proverbial “chips” fall where they may.
It’s not known yet whether Spitzer’s involvement is tied to the Emperor’s Club prostitution ring bust that made the new last week, but Fox is reporting that his voice was recorded as part of a wiretap operation related to an FBI investigation of “a” prostitution ring.
