Several factors motivate me to offer some unusual-but-necessary ideas for celebrating Cinco de Mayo next month. For your convenience, I’ve listed those factors below:
The first is an abundance of political rhetoric on the issues of illegal immigration and border security;
The second is a shortage of substantial and immediate federal government action on the issues listed above; and
The one that put me “over the edge” on these issues was the unjust conviction of Air Force veteran Peter Lynch this week on charges related to his removal of a Mexican flag from the campus of the University of New Mexico (For details, click here and here.)
Those factors in mind, how do I recommend Americans celebrate Cinco de Mayo, a holiday which, according to Wikipedia, commemorates Mexican heritage and pride? I DON’T.
That’s right, I DON’T! Instead, I recommend you celebrate CINCO DE MUSTARD as a day to recognize everything American — among other things, baseball, apple pie and hot dogs (topped with mustard, of course!).
Obviously a play on words (Mustard vs. Mayo), the CINCO DE MUSTARD twist enables you to use humor as a means to stimulate conversation about an otherwise serious issue.
By wearing a CINCO DE MUSTARD shirt like the one shown above, especially on May 5, you will attract questions from complete strangers (i.e., “What is Cinco De Mustard?”) which can serve as pads from which you can launch fruitful discussions about the nation’s immigration and border security shortcomings.

It is a shame that some Americans refuse the culture of their own country and won’t even open a website to find out some history: The general who won the battle of 5 de Mayo was actually born in Texas, from California to Texas used to be Mexican territory which links for eternity American and Mexican history (and culture) and the Cinco de Mayo holiday with it. Read a little more history and a bit less news maybe it will make you a better person!
