Obama: ‘I seek daily to imitate his faith’

April 24th, 2008 · 8 Comments

“I seek daily to imitate his faith.”

– Barack Obama

To whom is the Democrat presidential hopeful Obama referring? The Rev. Dr. Jeremiah Wright, of course. That news comes to us in the form of a piece written by a columnist and clergywoman who supports the junior senator from Illinois in his bid for the White House.

The two paragraphs below account for only 114 of the nearly 1,000 words Rev. Barbara Reynolds stitched together and published a month ago in a Louisiana Weekly column, America Needs Jeremiah Wrights. Together, they speak volumes about true relationship between Barack Obama and his pastor for more than two decades at Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago:

For 20 years, Rev. Wright has been a “friend, mentor and pastor.” This is how Sen. Obama described him in a letter dated February 5, 2007.

In that letter, the senator wrote “I constantly remember Rev. Wright as the shepherd who guided me to my commitment to Christ one Sunday morning at Trinity. I often consider, as I work in the Senate how he lives his life-a life of service to Trinity, Chicago and the nation; his activism on behalf of causes that few would champion and his dogged commitment to the first principles of love for God and fellow man. And in my personal walk, I seek daily to imitate his faith.”

In my opinion, the declarations Reverend Reynolds makes in her column run counter to much of what Obama has said on the campaign trail about his relationship with Reverend Wright. Others, including Velvet Hammer, agree.

Velvet shared her thoughts about it in the update section of this post at her blog, Ironic Surrealism II, yesterday:

Just a little over a year ago Obama was seeking daily to imitate Wright’s faith. Hows about that. Not that long ago, but before the mask was lifted and Wright was exposed for what he is. Funny how things can change, in the blink of an eye.

While Velvet is, for the most part, accurate,I think “hoodwink of an eye” is a more appropriate term to describe how things change when it comes to Obama. Thanks, Velvet!
