Five Ways Today’s Liberals Would Have Screwed Up the Louisiana Purchase

April 30th, 2008 · No Comments

Today, after visiting the American Minute and reading about the 205th anniversary of the Louisiana Purchase, I began to ponder how things might have turned out if today’s liberals had been in charge of Congress at the time. I came up with Five Ways Today’s Congressional Liberals Would Have Screwed Up the Louisiana Purchase:

1. They would have taken fact-finding trips to France to meet with Napolean Bonaparte and find out the real reasons behind the emperor’s desire to sell the land to the United States;

2. They would have commissioned frequent public opinion polls of citizens living in the 17 states of the union that existed in 1804;

3. They would have held hearings on Capitol Hill;

4. They would have dispatched someone like Jimmy Carter to meet with the Native American tribes on a trip that would have required cross-country travel across an area of nearly a million square miles by horseback, wagon and steam locomotive; and

5. They would have required environmental impact statements be completed before any deal could receive their serious consideration.

Each of the steps above would have required weeks, months or years to complete. In light of the fact that Napolean was in a cash crunch requiring an immediate $15 million fix, the liberals’ inability to act quickly and wisely would have resulted in another country making the Louisiana Purchase. In turn, that would mean Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid and many other states and districts represented by liberal members of Congress would not exist today.

Hmmm? Maybe it wouldn’t have been so bad after all.
