Today is Mother’s Day, one of the country’s most-honored national observances and a holiday that is definitely not trivial.
The idea started in 1908 with Anna Jarvis of West Virginia, honoring her recently-departed mother who had hoped that, one day, there would be a day to commemorate all mothers. By 1911, every state observed Mother’s Day and, three years later, Congress made it a national event.
Below are some more bits of trivia related to this non-trivial holiday, courtesy of the Census Bureau:
- There are nearly 83 million mothers across the U.S;
- About 4 million women give birth each year and, on average, 425,000 of those mothers are teens and 112,000 are 40 and older;
- The odds of a woman delivering twins are one-in-31;
- More births occur in August than any other month; and
- Tuesday is the most common birthday.
This blogger’s mom, now 83, raised six kids, including me, and no woman is more special than she is.
