While some people might cringe at the thought of seeing more dead animals on Illinois roadways, members of the cup-half-full crowd will view a recent decision by the state department of transportation as one that creates opportunities to lower grocery bills and, more importantly, fight hunger in the state.
IDOT officials said yesterday their crews will continue to remove dead animals in driving lanes and any deemed hazardous to motorists, according to recent news accounts, but the rest of the roadkill will be left for scavengers.
In support of optimists in the “Land of Lincoln,” the creative minds at The Bob McCarty Shop came up with ROADKILLINOIS, a new line of merchandise — including t-shirts, mugs, bumper stickers and more — to show support for those individuals who can act quickly to locate, retrieve, clean and refrigerate/freeze the newfound abundance of “expired” meat.
In addition, we offer some recommendation for those new to the pastime of roadside scavenging:
- I recommend you purchase the Jerky Shooter Kit which includes everything you need to make jerky, beef sticks and easy-to-chew meat strips from ground beef, deer, elk, buffalo, turkey or road kill; and
- To have more fun with your food, I recommend you purchase the Road Kill Branding Iron. It’s a must-have grilling accessory you can use to impress your dinner guests this summer!
Enjoy your blacktop grocery shopping and asphalt-inspired menus — and don’t forget to get your own ROADKILLINOIS gear! To see the full selection, click here.
