Ad Campaign to Highlight Effects of Overpopulation

June 2nd, 2008 · 2 Comments

Californians for Population Stabilization and its partners in America’s Leadership Team for Long Range Population-Immigration-Resource Planning unveiled an ad campaign this week to raise America’s awareness of the effects of population growth. The ads will appear in major national publications.

“If population growth continues at its present pace, our faltering quality of life will continue to erode. Americans won’t be able to conserve their way out of the emerging overpopulation crisis,” said Diana Hull, the organization’s president.

“Population growth is decimating the gains that the United States has made in energy conservation and environmental protection. In major metropolitan areas, traffic has descended into perpetual gridlock, and overcrowding strains public schools, hospitals and social services. Water shortages and severe drought imperil tens of millions of Americans. Despite the staggering consequences that Americans endure from rapidly increasing population: cars jamming our roads, out-of-control building and sprawl and vanishing resources, our elected officials continue to fail to make the obvious connections and then act,” continued Hull.

The United States now has a population of more than 300 million people, a number that is projected to jump by another 100 million in 30 years. If nothing is done to halt this increase, the U.S. will face a population of 600 million people by the end of this century.

More than 80% of population growth, nationally, will continue to be a direct result of immigration and immigrant births. In California that increase accounts for virtually 100 percent of that growth.

This national ad campaign is the first salvo in a long-term campaign by CAPS and its partners to raise public awareness of the magnitude of growth-inducing problems and their source, to ensure that elected officials and candidates for public office will no longer be able to ignore this most important issue of our time.

I think you missed the point. Looking at the road filled with gridlocked automobiles I saw machines-not people.

This is important because I would argue our energy use is attached not to population size but to economic size. Our economies need to use energy to power factories, office complexes, and a number of different forms of transportation.

Cut down on the size of the economy or amount of energy that economy uses to exist and you may see a fall in the amount of energy used (hopefully a in pollution generated too).

Focusing on population rather than the economy leads to a China-like effect where the number of children born each year falls (”1 child policy”) while the amount of energy used and pollution generated each year grows. Thus you fail to save the planet.

Nathaniel — Perhaps, it would have helped if I had inserted three words — “of Illegal Immigrants” — to the end of the headline. There was, however, not enough room.
