On the heels of yesterday’s post about what many in news media and financial sectors are describing as the second-largest bank failure in U.S. history, I wondered how many other banks had failed in recent years. Where’s a good website to go to for a “headsup” before the banks close?

Janis, any advance word of a pending bank closure would be a self-fulfilling prophecy: hints of bank failure would cause depositors to “make a run on the bank,” withdrawing their deposits and “causing” an unsteady bank to fail. That’s why FDIC was created: so consumers (up to $100,000) didn’t need to worry.
