Congress Should Delay Recess, Lift Drilling Ban

July 23rd, 2008 · 7 Comments

Grassfire.org announced this afternoon that more than 100,000 citizens have signed a petition calling upon Congress to stay in session until a ban on offshore drilling is lifted. The text of the nonprofit group’s news release appears below:

CHESAPEAKE, Va., July 23 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ – Unsure of the economy and feeling a bite at the pumps, more than 100,000 citizens are sending a loud message to Congress to lift the legislative and funding ban on offshore oil drilling, or forego their August recess.

“The energy crisis is crippling American families, and they want real action, right now. If that means Congress needs to stay overtime, and postpone vacation plans, so be it,” says Steve Elliott, president of Grassfire.org, one of the nation’s leading online citizen action networks. “Lifting the ban on offshore drilling makes sense, and based on the incredible response that we have seen since launching this petition over the last four days, it’s something Americans are demanding.”

Elliott adds that because of the severity of the crisis, and the looming, month-long congressional recess, Grassfire representatives are delivering petitions on a daily basis to both Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and Minority Leader Mitch McConnell. “Time is short, and they both need to see that Americans want the ban lifted right now.”

In addition to lifting the ban on offshore drilling, the petition also supports removing restrictions for exploration in ANWR, lifting barriers on Shale Oil exploration, enhancing exploration for natural gas, significantly increasing domestic nuclear power and building more refineries. “It’s obvious to all that changes must be made regarding our energy policies. Americans are doing their part. Now it’s time Congress steps up and does something constructive and positive for the people,” says Elliott.

Editor’s Note: If the Democrat-controlled Congress ignores this tidal wave of citizen action, your next best option to offset high fuel prices is to purchase a Will work for fuel t-shirt (right). Why? Because it might help you in your quest to find a second or third job to help cover your household’s growing fuel bill.

Voters can always start recalls on their state and federal Senators and Reps if they do not do as the voters wish. Believe me in did not take very long to make things happen in Louisiana. And I think the Louisiana lawmakers went into shock. Gov Jindal certainly hopped to it to veto the offending payraise bill once two Recall petitions were filed on him..

As billionaire oilman T. Boone Pickens said, “we can’t drill our way out of this. ” It’s time to kick the oil junkies to the curb and switch to energy systems that improve our security and keep our money and jobs at home.

Besides, Bush’s own DOE tells us drilling in Alaska will only drop the price 2 cents, 20 years in the future.

But why confuse the public with facts when the snake oil is still available.

jay alt — Information at the DOE link is based upon current restrictions, not a lifting of drilling bans. Snake oil? Ha!

All voters to to get informed on this issue and I found this aricle to be concise and to the point:

Drill Now is transparent political pandering that will accomplish little except to destroy our coastlines. But if the Republicans really want it, bring it on. Where will the drilling take place? Mostly in red states. I say drill them until they can’t take it anymore. Line their coasts with rigs as far as the eye can see. Gas will still be $4 a gallon (or more). But they can have the insane satisfaction of losing yet another election while completely destroying their own beaches. Maybe then they’ll wake up. But it will be too late.

Mark — Get out of your mom’s basement and educate yourself before you post another ill-informed liberal-Kool-Aid comment like the one above. Thanks in advance!

    1. When the drillling starts, new refineries will be built also. It will take about 3 years for the first of the new oil to be processed into gasoline.

    2. People saying that it will take 10 to 20 years are repeating the words of politicians.

    3. When Predsident Bust announced the lift of the drilling ban from the Executive side, the price of oil on the market immediately started dropping (it had actually already dropped a little because of supply and demand, but it started droppping more sharply after Bush’s announcement). When and if Congress removes the ban, the price will drop more (because of world speculation). If Congress blocks the drilling, the price will go back up (depending on supply and demand).

    4. The advancements in oil drilling have removed the concerns for environmental safety.

    5. Take time to investigate the soicialist agenda of the environmental groups. The founder of the Green Movement retired because of the soicialist activists’ involvement. Please investigate and look for the truth of these things.

    6. I see people repeating the words of politicians. I see people repeating the words of reporters that repeat the words of politicians. Please learn to think for yourself and to see past idiocy.
