After reading an article published in The Georgia Times today, I couldn’t shake the thought that I might be glimpsing into the future of a United States with Barack Obama in the Oval Office. A statement by Georgia’s deputy defense minister, Batu Kutelia, served as the headline of the article:
“We did not prepare for this kind of eventuality.”
We did not prepare.
Any good Boy Scout knows that preparation is the key to success in life. In the case of countries like Georgia and the United States, it’s the key to fending off threats to national security, sovereignty and survival. Unfortunately, it appears the liberal junior senator from Illinois was never a Boy Scout and appears naive — or just plain stupid — when it comes to matters of national defense.
In a speech captured in an Obama campaign video, the presumptive Democratic Party presidential nominee outlined his priorities on defense. Below are declarations he made in that speech, each of which is followed by my reactions directed at the candidate:
- “I’m the only major candidate who opposed this war from the beginning and, as president, I will end it.” — And you’re the only major candidate who was wrong. Admit it: We won, and it’s coming to an end with or without you.
- “I will cut investments in unproven missile defense systems.” — Remember Ronald Reagan? He used a then-unproven Star Wars missile defense system to help convince leaders of the now-defunct Soviet Union that they would lose the Cold War…and they did! Perhaps, you should read up on that!
- “I will not weaponize space.” — Meanwhile, Barack, the Chinese, the Russians, the Iranians and virtually every other major player on the planet will, leaving the United States in an extremely dangerous position, exposed. You don’t really want that, do you?
- “I will slow our development of future combat systems.” — Rinse and repeat, using answer to “I will not weaponize space” above.
- “And I will institute an independent defense priorities board to ensure that the quadrennial defense review is not used to justify unnecessary spending.” — In other words, you plan to put friends like William Ayers and Tony Rezko in positions of oversight over military experts with decades of experience. Have you lost your mind?
- “I will set a goal of a world without nuclear weapons.” — That kind of thinking might win you a round of applause during the interview portion of a beauty pageant. On the world stage, however, it reeks of dangerous idealistic thinking.
- “I will not develop new nuclear weapons.” — That’s okay. As long as you allow experts in that field to continue their work.
- “I will seek a global ban on the production of fissile material.” — I sincerely doubt you even know what fissile material is.
- “I will negotiate with Russia to take our ICBMs off hair-trigger alert.” — That’s a stellar idea, Barack! If you’ve paid any attention to recent events in Georgia, you know how eager and willing Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin and his puppet, President Dmitry Medvedev, are to negotiate.
Obama’s dangerous declarations, whether considered individually or as a group, should cause patriotic Americans to shudder and, hopefully, to vote for John McCain.
