Will Activists Rage Against Machine in Denver?

August 27th, 2008 · No Comments

According to one of this blog’s trusted contacts in the Mile High City, unnamed Denver city officials are concerned that RECREATE ’68 activists might rage against the Democratic Party machine in conjunction with a concert by the volatile rap group, Rage Against the Machine, tonight.

Of course, the fact that those activists arrived this morning to find Civic Center Park — the whole park — fenced off has something to do with the prediction.

So why was the entire park fenced off?

The official explanation, my source tells me, is that the fence was erected in advance of a Taste of Colorado event which begins Friday and runs through the holiday weekend.  RECREATE ’68 organizers say, regardless of the reason why it was erected, that the fence violates their group’s permit to rally at the park today.

Whether or not the combination of a fence and a Rage Against The Machine performance prompts activists to let loose and riot remains to be seen.  It’s possible, however, that there will be more Democratic National Convention fireworks outside the Pepsi Center than inside.
