When I read in a Department of State news release this morning that Fran Drescher will be appointed the nation’s newest public diplomacy envoy Monday morning, I immediately surmised that Condoleezza Rice and her gang at the State Department had lost it.  A few moments later, however, I realized the brilliance of such an appointment.

In case you’re drawing a blank about who Drescher is, think back to the 1990s and a CBS sitcom starring an actress with an extremely annoying voice in the title role as “The Nanny.” Yes, that Fran Drescher!

Her mission, should she choose to accept it, will be to “support U.S. public diplomacy efforts.”  Her first trip in this new role will take place later this month and include stops in Romania, Hungary, Kosovo and Poland.  The trip will serve as a test-drive for Drescher and prove to Rice whether or not her initial hunch about the actress was on target.

If, in Rice’s opinion, Drescher does well on that trip, reports of strained diplomatic relations between the United States and leaders of those countries should follow within days.  Through phone calls to leaders of those nations, Rice will be able to repair the damage done by Drescher.

Meanwhile, the brilliance of the Drescher appointment will become evident soon after Rice implements Phase 2 of her strategy.  That phase will involve dispatching Drescher to Moscow where she will meet for several days with Russian President Dmitry Medvedev and Prime Minister Vladimir Putin.

After listening to Drescher talk for hours and hours on end with no apparent end in site, Medvedev and Putin will beg the United States to withdraw her and, Rice expects, to succumb to U.S. demands that they remove Russian troops and equipment from the breakaway Georgian republics of South Ossetia and Abkhazia.

Sorry for doubting you, Condi.

God bless America!
