It appears both Rece Davis and Brian Bennett missed the opportunity to watch the Oklahoma Sooners pummel UT-Chattanooga amidst thunder and lightning — both on the field and in the skies above it — in Norman last weekend. Had the ESPN college football prognosticators watched the nation’s fourth-ranked team as it hung 50 points on its opponent by half-time en route to a 57-2 win, I doubt they would be discounting Bob Stoops’ squad in their prediction pieces this week.
In his GameDay Kickoff piece yesterday, Davis wrote, “I believe in the Sooners. I also believe Cincinnati has the formula to give them fits.”
In a similar vein, Bennett used space under the headline, What to Watch: Week 2 primer, to offer a dose of doubtful words about the team: “Oklahoma probably has too many horses, especially at home, but don’t be surprised if this stays interesting well past halftime.”
Perhaps, Davis and Bennett are simply trying to raise interest and viewer ratings in the match-up now that it’s set to air in a regional broadcast on ABC, ESPN’s parent network, at 2:30 p.m. Central. That must be it. After all, others in the college football world are making predictions that fly in the face of the ESPNers. Some examples appear below:
- Online oddsmaker Point-Spreads.com has Oklahoma favored by 23.5 points.
- Sporting News lists the Sooners as a 21.5-point favorite.
BOOMER SOONER!

UPDATE: Sooners win 52-26. OU quarterback Sam Bradford throws for a career-best 395 yards and five touchdowns.

I agree that the coverage of the Sooners by ESPN this year has been wierd. I noticed it a few weeks ago. At the time the Sooners were ranked 2d or 3d and had just put a beat down on Washington, at Washington. This was their third straight win by three TDs or more. Despite this they received barely a mention on the recap of ESPN College Game Day . Last week, after USC lost and the Sooners beat TCU, they got a short mention on the Game Day recap, but nothing like what would be expected of a team poised to take over the #1 spot in the rankings. Here’s my theory about the lack of coverage by ESPN: The Sooners and the Big 12 is affiliated with ESPN’s mortal enemy, Fox Sports. Promoting OU, or for that matter any other Big 12 squad is BAD FOR ESPN’S TV RATINGS. I hope I’m proven wrong , but we’ll see.
