Is There a Tanning Bed Double Standard?

September 16th, 2008 · 6 Comments

The Los Angeles Times and other media outlets are reporting that Republican vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin owns a tanning bed.  It seems owning a tanning bed is newsworthy only when it’s owned by a white female presidential running mate.  Talk about a double standard.

Has anyone asked Barack Obama if he owns a tanning bed?  Political correctness prevents even the late night talk show hosts from touching that one with a ten-foot poll.  After all, such a question would generate charges of racism faster than a liberal can say, “Swiftboat!”  Never mind that (1) everyone knows the answer to the question and (2) those with purely humorous intentions — including yours truly — would find the comedy value of the question priceless.

Despite the fact that Vitamin D supplements are widely available, the best way to get the vitamin is through the body’s synthesis of sunlight. The tanning bed is a practical proxy during those months of 24/7 darkness in Alaska. But the leftard MSM never lets a bit of rational thought get in the way of sensationalizing Republicans’ mundane activities.

skh.pcola — Thanks for shedding some UV light on the subject.

Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) is also medically recognized illness and prevalent in Arctic conditions of reduced light. Sweden has one of the highest suicide rates of any country and some scientists attribute SAD as the cause of the illness. Light (UV) therapy is medically recognized as effective treatment in combatting SAD. Of course, our entertainment-press with their roots in Hollywood who don’t have an issue with not enough sunlight and are self-absorbed in their vanity would rather make an issue about a sunbed and think it MUST be vanity driving Palin to “getting her St Tropez tan.”

I don’t question her desire to have or use a tanning bed but do wonder about the effects of prolonged use of a tanning bed on unborn children. Use of a tanning bed was a “no no” according to my OB. It inteferes with the body’s ability to produce/maintain folic acid which is crucial for moms, but especially older moms in preventing birth defects.

Older Mom — While I’ve seen reports that she owns a tanning bed, I haven’t seen/read anything about how often or how recently she’s used the tanning bed.

I think we’re missing the point….who really cares if SP uses a tanning bed?! I can see the interview now with Obama…”Senator Obama, you’re looking a shade darker now…you must be using a tanning bed. Care to comment?” Yeah, right! Let’s see how that furthers the interviewers career. But it’s okay to ask a ‘white Anglo-Saxon Protestant’ woman and we are forced to accept the double-standard.
