Fox News Channel’s Carl Cameron just broke news that Republican presidential nominee John McCain said he is suspending his campaign in order to return to Washington, D.C., and help craft a better solution to the nation’s economic crisis than the one now on the table.
Furthermore, Cameron reported that McCain has challenged his opponent, Democrat Barack Obama to likewise suspend his campaign and return to the nation’s capitol to work on the economic issue at hand.
Finally, Cameron reported that McCain is asking the Commission on Presidential Debates to postpone the first presidential debate — on foreign policy — set to take place Friday in Oxford, Miss.

UPDATE 9/24/08 2:05 p.m. Central: Speaking from Florida New York City during a news conference that started at 2:05 p.m. Central, McCain began by saying, “America this week faces a historic crisis in our financial system.” He added that “I do not believe that the (economic rescue) plan on the table will pass as it stands, and we’re running out of time.“ He concluded by calling upon the president to bring together leaders of both the House and the Senate to meet immediately to work on a plan to resolve the situation.”
UPDATE #2 9/24/08 2:25 p.m. Central: FNC reports that McCain has canceled both an appearance tonight on The Late Show with David Letterman and an FNC interview tomorrow. McCain spokesperson Nancy Pfotenhauer denied that McCain’s move is politically motivated.
UPDATE #3 9/24/08 2:46 p.m. Central: FNC’s Shepard Smith spoke on the air with Dr. Gloria Kellum of the University of Mississippi. She said the university — and members of the CPD with whom she is meeting this afternoon — is moving forward with plans to hold the debate as scheduled.
UPDATE #4 9/24/08 2:56 p.m. Central: Senior Barack Obama campaign officials, according to FNC’s Smith, are now telling Fox News they believe the debate can still be held and the economic issues still be addressed. They did not, however, go so far as to criticize McCain — yet anyway — for his call to postpone the debate and suspend campaigns.

Will you accept the scripted Presidential ‘debate’ again?
Brought to you by your ‘good friends’ at Wall Street.
No Paul or Nader Main Street USA,
nor Cynthia McKinney.

I find it funny that McCain is going down to Washington to work on the crisis, given his assertion a few days ago that “the fundamentals of our economy are strong,” which within 24 hours turned into “complete crisis”. Meanwhile, his VP is going around claiming that Fannie and Freddie have been costing tax payers too much money!
They haven’t got a clue, so forgive me for thinking “what a coincidence!” when he’s falling behind in the polls again, and has a debate coming up in which he’d probably get creamed by someone who’s not stuck in 1989.

Running and hiding from the debate! I must really be stuck in the past, cause now a days, we have an invention called the phone, which can instantly put him in contact with anyone in Congress. He can contribute that way, but then he would not be able to avoid the debate, and would not be able to get more coach/script time in with Palin for her debate.

Mike and Kevin — Attaboys all around. Talk about being stuck in the past. You boys are stuck in partisan politics and, apparently, don’t believe in COUNTRY FIRST. Sad for you!

Why am I not surprised? This is exactly what one would expect a senator of McCain’s stature to do. “Country First” is indeed the motto by which he lives. How sad that others would mock his announcement as being politically motivated.

I’m not a big fan of John McCain, but even less so of BHO.
My guess, though, is that J.M. approaches this financial debacle much like war: he’d rather lose an election than win a debate – or let wall street crumble.
And the fundamentals of this economy ~are sound. It’s our bloated, pork barrel, obtuse gub’mint that SVX.
Service & tech industries strong; Exports up; low unemployment (yes, 6% is normal); Machine tools & durable goods steady; commercial banking is first rate .
It’s the wall street financial/investment nitwits squandering other people’s money through congress’ meddling that brought us to this cliff.
I will say that one of the lone voices of reason through the years on this train wreck in slow motion has been McCain. Perhaps he can get to D.C. before the dimbulbs in congress can screw it up even more.

Denise-Mary is right.
There is probably a lot of other bad financial news which will emerge in the next few days.
10,000 jobs lost in New York City’s financial sector in the last few weeks. The financial sector is a very important one revenue-wise for New Yorkers.
