When I read a piece in which Barack Obama running mate Joe Biden was described by one source as a “rainmaker,” I just had to read it.  After all, The Rainmaker is one of my favorite John Grisham novels.  Interestingly, both the description of Biden and the Grisham book revolve around trial lawyers.  Here it is:

At an intimate, $2 million fund-raiser put on by a group of trial lawyers in a private home in Washington, D.C. last week, he boasted that he had ‘done more than any other senator’ for trial lawyers. There are ‘two groups that stand between us and the barbarians at the gate,’ he professed. ‘It’s you and organized labor.’” (Lisa Wangsness, “Biden Gaffes Leave Democrats With Mixed Emotions,” The Boston Globe, 10/1/08)

Unlike Sarah Palin, who could pass for the average woman on the street, the senator from Delaware is, without a doubt, Not Your Average Joe.  I think that lack-of-common-man quality will shine through during the vice presidential debate tonight at Washington University in St. Louis.
