On One Foreign Policy Matter, I Trust Sarah Palin

October 2nd, 2008 · 2 Comments

Given the choice between having Sarah Palin or Joe Biden make the decision about a little-publicized proposal for new construction in the nation’s 49th state, I’d choose the Alaska governor every time.  Why?  Because I’m convinced her foreign policy instincts are better than the six-term senator from Delaware.

To date, only three construction projects in Alaska come to mind as having ever generated much interest in the “Lower 48.”  Two of the projects — the Pacific Coast Highway and the Alaska Pipeline — were completed.  The third, known as “The Bridge to Nowhere,” did not.  It’s the recently-proposed fourth project, however, that stands to generate the most interest ever if, that is, it ever gets off the ground — or, in this case, under it.

Proposed by then-Russian President Vladimir Putin 18 months ago, the project involves building a tunnel beneath the Bering Sea that links Russia and Alaska.  It surfaced again on six months ago when the UK’s Times Online reported that now-Prime Minister Putin planned to share his bridge-building plan with President George W. Bush during a meeting April 7 at the Black Sea resort of Sochi.

What would Vice President Palin say in response to the proposal by former KGB spy chief Putin?

I suspect she would tell him “NO!” or, possibly, “HELL NO!” After all, she knows Putin was the mastermind behind Russia’s recent unprovoked invasion and occupation of Georgia, and she’s not about to build an underwater path via which the Russians might one day decide to invade her country.

What would wannabe-vice president Biden offer in response to Putin’s proposal?

An article by Michael Crowley, published in The New Republic less than six weeks after the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, provides insight into the ideas Biden had for dealing with threats posed by radical Islamic countries like Iran:

At the Tuesday-morning meeting with committee staffers, Biden launches into a stream-of-consciousness monologue about what his committee should be doing, before he finally admits the obvious: “I’m groping here.” Then he hits on an idea: America needs to show the Arab world that we’re not bent on its destruction. “Seems to me this would be a good time to send, no strings attached, a check for $200 million to Iran,” Biden declares. He surveys the table with raised eyebrows, a How do ya like that? look on his face.

Confronted by a Cold War-loving Russian like Putin, I suspect Biden would not only agree to having the tunnel constructed but he would also agree to foot the bill — estimated at $10 billion to $12 billion!

Regardless of the outcome of tonight’s vice presidential debate as determined by the liberal media types on “spin alley,” the clear winner for the American people is the lady from Wasilla.

The bridge to Russia must be a federal matter.

BA — It is, and with VP Sarah Palin, it will be handled correctly. With Biden as #2, not so much.
