Origin of Obama’s Last Name Explains A Lot

October 3rd, 2008 · 58 Comments

Barack Obama has used at least five different names* during his 47-year lifetime, according to a lawsuit contesting his citizenship qualifications to seek the presidency.  Because most Americans know him only by the name they see on campaign signs, I decided to investigate the origins of his name — specifically, his last name — and was pleasantly surprised by what I found.  Moreover, had I not read it with my own eyes, I might not have believed it.

The origin of the name “Obama,” according to Wiki Answers, is based on the Luo verb that means “to be bent” or “to be twisted.” [Note: No, I didn't make this up!]

That might explain why I am so vehemently opposed to the Democratic Party presidential nominee and his bid for the White House.

*They are:  Barack Hussein Obama, Barry Soetoro, Barry Obama, Barack Dunham and Barry Dunham.

One interesting point is the speech by Quaddafi of Libya in July, 2008, during which he referred to the “citizen of Kenya” and muslim whom all islamic states are supporting. Now, with their intelligence agencies, would not the leader of a muslim nation not know the origins of Obama? When Obama was 21, he traveled to Pakistan on a Kenyan passport that showed his citizenship as Kenyan. The left has worked so hard to cover any tracks from this Manchurian Candidate, but hopefully the truth will come out. Our nation’s salvation relies on his defeat and that of the Cloward-Piven strategy of forcing political change through orchestrated crisis, which is exactly what the Demoncrats have produced with their wholesale theft at Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, as well as Countrywide, the main pusher of the toxic mortgages to the former Demoncrats running F. & F. Obama was the number 1 recipient of political donations (bribes) from Countrywide, even while they destroyed the mortgage industry. Not based on stupidity, but on calculated actions, as taught to ACORN foot soldiers by Obama, who then moved up to counsel for ACORN with his legal training finished. We need to send Obama, Geo. Wiley, Wade Rathke, Wm. Ayers, Carl Davidson, the last three the founders of SDS, Bernadine Dohrn, and Geo. Soros to share the hut with Obama’s extremely poor brother, whom Obama cares not a wit for. Our country would be markedly improved with these forced banishments.

One of the things that drives me crazy is that Obama gets away with claiming that “Barack” is a Swahili (ie. African language) word. I am fluent in Swahili, and I can tell you that Barack is NOT Swahili. There is a common Swahili name “Baraka” (which means blessing), but
“Barack” obviously is of Arabic origins. In Swahili, one would never find “ck” together in a word, nor would a word end in a consonant. Why does he try to hide his name’s true origins? I’m tired of his constant deceptions… even if they’re just over small issues, it still doesn’t give me much hope that I can trust him re. anything.

In my oppinion; you guys are idiots. First of all, Wikipedia is not a credibal site at all. Second of all, did all you people check what your last name means on Wikipedia? I’m guessing at least one of your names contain something “bad”. If that’s true do you think you’d support the belief that a name makes who you are, or the belief that your last name doesn’t brand you, and you are who you are. You racist, ignorant, idiots. Ha

  • 9 hotoffthepress2 // Oct 7, 2008 at 5:12 pm

    lilly — blah-blah-blah…

  • 10 Cleveland Kent Evans // Oct 13, 2008 at 4:58 pm

Barack is an _Anglicized_ version of a name which is “Baraka” in Swahili and “Barakat” in Arabic. You don’t find “ck” in normal spellings of Arabic words any more than you find them in Swahili. That spelling is influenced by the English language, which is of course as widely used by educated people in Kenya as Swahili is.

Obama is based on the Luo language verb for “to be bent”. But it does not refer to personality, but is the word for being physically bent. It was originally the given name of the candidate’s great-grandfather. Luo given names are traditionally created by the infant’s mother or grandmother and refer to something about the circumstances of the child’s birth. Though no one knows for sure, the two best possibilities are either that the senator’s great-grandfather was the product of a breech birth, or that something about one of his arms or legs looked a bit bent to his relatives right after he was born.

And anyone who uses the etymological origin of any candidate’s name as a reason to vote for or against him or her is being silly, to say the least.

  • 12 hotoffthepress2 // Oct 15, 2008 at 12:21 pm

Bruno — Really, it’s not. The difference is that Obama and the meaning of his last name fit perfectly. He’s bent, twisted, etc. “Moor” than you, perhaps.

    Hey, hotoffthepress2

In your own words, without making mistakes in facts or reasoning, what are Obama’s mindset and policies that make you nervous. In phrasing them, be very specific, with clear examples, and tell us all how they apply to you personally. Stick to national, social, and fiscal policies, and just don’t use the McCain/Palin line.

You have ridiculed the other posters, but failed to enunciate any individual wisdom.

Barack Obama was born in Hawaii. He was named directly after his father, which is a common custom, especially in America. Why doesn’t anyone want to talk about what Johnny Boy did to his wife when he got out of the service. He’s a rotten cheater who screwed more times than a Dewalt and his wife-with all her money-stole drugs from kids in need of charity. GIVE ME A BREAK WITH THIS B.S.

  • 21 Denise LowerClass-Social Class // Oct 19, 2008 at 12:47 pm

Perhaps in time those of you who cannot search past Wikipedia will search long enough to find that the name Barack, Barak, and any such derivative can be traced back not only to Arabian ties, but specifically African, and further, Hebrew (Baruch). If you know something about linguistics, then you’d understand the name has been borrowed ultimately from the semitic languages.
Those who lace their observations and dialogue should be wary in times like these – as you indicate at face value where your heart and intellect lie. I have come to believe that racism has become so much encoded upon mankind’s dna, that he is not aware of the genomic possibilities of such an intellectual outlook actually occurring in the genetic coding, but then, again, we are Americans who cannot name the people who represent us locally, or at the state level, but only in America are we experts at absolutely nothing but quoting distorted facts and statistics. We created the term spin-doctor in our own little political lab located in the district of columbia. Rather than worry about Obama, you need to hit your search buttons a few more times and try to ascertain why we are in the position we are in, and that goes back to racist ideologies that have been covered up since the history of mankind. Who is actually running the show? Neither Republican or Democrat – for we, and the parties are simply pawns of a much larger machinistic enterprise. Can your grey matter comprehend? White matter? Black matter? Red??? Which will it be? What has either mindset done for all peoples lately? Man’s ideologies have become screwed with man’s egotistical pursuits. We are now all suffering because of it. Americans know so much, but so damn little. Those who are negative thinkers will add to the cultural and political tsunami that will overtake us all. What is Babylon, and who is Jezebel? Who was told, “You will go to them; but for their part, they will not listen to you,” ?
A long time ago, the U.S. befriended a man called Saddam Hussein. We remained friends with him until we felt he showed us otherwise…And then, we beheaded him…Allow an intelligent blackamoor to have his day, if you will…If he fails your tests, you can always shout, “To the guillotine.” Just like your ignorant compadritos (jacques or, jacks, i.e., the jacquerie) of the French Revolution demanded, before they set about beheading everyone in sight whom they felt had been part of the aristocratic regime. Then the little twits showed they were no better in heart than the party they denounced. People from all segments of society have the potential to be noble and virtuous. I would rather be assisted by the good Samaritan, then assisted by the hypocritical Christian who wears a white sheet for reasons other than bedcovers at night. I am not a muslim, socialist, blackamoor, but I am a proud, pro-American, living for my country according to His way — the ONLY way. Call me a religious fanatic, zealot…I am who I am, and you will never change that.

Denise — Are you harassing me for using comment moderation? • 25 Kevin Hussein Holmes // Oct 19, 2008 at 1:07 pm

Of course that is not my “real” middle name, but in solidarity with our next President, and to dissuade you from thinking that I give a rip about someone’s name and how that shapes their thinking, I have chosen to represent myself thusly. How do you feel that one of the most Patriotic, least assailable members of the Republican Party, Colin Powell, has endorsed Barack Hussein Obama, Jr. for President of the United States? It makes your blood boil, I’m sure. And what do you plan on doing once this great American is elected to guide our country out of the septic tank Bush has left us with? Will you provide us with some delicious irony and call for Secessionist rallies to rebuke those voters who saw past your distractions and voted for a Man, not against a Name?

Hot off the press — they are not ramblings. My thoughts show intelligence from a humanities perspective. You cannot keep up — as intelligent as you are, surely you are aware of all my references. I am culturally literate. Is this not what educated people are supposed to be? I did not speak in thug language, or, country hick vernacular. I simply spoke using references that every educated person should recognize. Hope you learned something while you were in your church. Check your heart, and moderate, if you please…

  • 28 hotoffthepress2 // Oct 19, 2008 at 6:45 pm

Denise — Consider using 10 words instead of 10,000, and you might not put people to sleep while they wait for you to make your point. And, please, stop reminding me to moderate. That’s a given.

  • 29 Lanormal // Oct 22, 2008 at 8:33 am

has McCain really been honest about his history? Maybe you just think he has because you want to believe he’s righteous and honest and good. Truth of the matter is, ALL politicians lie (just like the rest of us). McCain has lied about his past and about Obama’s and vice versa. The important thing is to figure out which of the lies are important, and which are not. I think it’s unfortunate that you wish to characterize Obama as bent and twisted and use the information you got from Wiki answers to make some point about him being unstable – especially when the rest of that result on Wiki says the name probably referred to a physical birth defect rather than something relating to temperament, and the former is nothing to make light of sir.

Maybe you’d like to read this
    http://www.rollingstone.com/news/coverstory/make_believe_maverick_the_real_john_mccain

Political bias or not – I’d say the information here about McCain’s temperament and his honesty regarding probably has a more factual base in reality than a blurb of information you got off a website that anyone can post information on. There’s a reason why college professors do not let their students use Wiki-anything as sources for research.

  • 30 hotoffthepress2 // Oct 22, 2008 at 8:56 am

    The devil is quite near…

And though I watch around me, with wonderous eyes of awe
As the masses are quite mesmerized, by this devil in disguise
He speaks of change and sharing, his shape it shifts to please
And the masses they’re believing, on this hoary tongue of lies

He speaks of all the things he’ll do, of the dragons he will slay
And the spreading of the booty, to the masses he does tell
His opponent is a temperate man, whose heart is full with love
For a country held in turmoil, a place he knows quite well

But the masses are quite mesmerized, by this devil in disguise
As he speaks of better things to come, for the loved ones of us all
So I ask my friends and countrymen, please keep and open ear
And keep an open view on things, for the moment is quite near

I ask my friends and neighbors, who may be a slight naive
To take a second look around, and see what lurks beyond
For the devil tends to shift his shape, to please the eye of all
And he speaks his words to please the ear, and appeals to where we ache

So take another look my friends, and try to see the truth
And try to see the view beyond, the better days to come
For all we ever want and need, is within our grasp quite soon
If only through the fog we saw, the harvester of lies, the devil in disguise

He bears a name from lands afar, and his past is cloaked from all
His lineage of land not sure, a twisted past he wears
So please, I beg, I plead my case… please take another look

at this devil who has promised all, the fortune that they seek

Is this really what you seek my friends?
This sprite whose set the hook? For bait, is what he has laid out
and the school has seen the fare
And the school he has now netted
    Is fully unaware.

  • 34 Lanormal // Oct 23, 2008 at 10:22 am

I too have a journalism degree, as well as a political science degree, and a masters in global affairs. I did not make the reference to journalism to imply that you are reporting the truth on your blog. I was illustrating the fact that it’s impossible to know what is good reporting and what is crap, because everyone claims to write the truth, yet all the stories come out a little different. As for the bible comment -I was not being literal, so you can cast your shame elsewhere. Or don’t – I’m quite secure with my place in this world and with my spirituality. I only use the funny pages to line my bird cage – the parakeet likes fox trot.

  • 35 Mike // Oct 29, 2008 at 10:11 pm

The fact is Obama is a Christian. There is no proof whatsoever that he is a Muslim. He has always been going to Churches since childhood, prays, believes, and practices in Christianity, and most importantly he has always identified himself as a Christian. ———–

The name “Barack” is a Biblical name found in the Old Testament. The Muslim Koran also has a lot of Old Testament in it. And lets not forget that Arabic and Hebrew languages are closely related being Semetic, so they share a lot of common words. So “Barack” is not only a Judeo-Christian name but also a Muslim name. The name “Obama” is from Swahili language of Kenya which has a lot of words from Arabic, origins of the word “Obama” might be from the Semitic Arabic. By the way, all Arabs are not Muslims, a large minority amongst them are Christians, who happen to be the earliest Christian community in the world and proudly reads/studies their Bible in Arabic! ———-

Regardless of the name “Barack Obama” and its origins, the person himself is a proud US citizen who has devoted his life to make America a better place. It is irrelevent that Obama’s father was a Kenyan Muslim (who he only met once in his life)! This logic is as ridiculous as calling a person an engineer just because his father was one. It is irrelevent that the name Barack Obama sounds foreign to many Americans today! America is a land of immigrants, there have always been names sounding alien to Americans until they are absorbed into the American melting pot with the passage of time. ———-

Finally, it is very racist of some Americans to connote being a Muslim as a negative thing. Terrorism is supported and practised by a tiny minority among Muslims. Overwhelming majority of Muslims are not only strongly against any kind of terrorism, but it is also proven that terrorism is anti-Islam. To stereotype all Muslims as terrorists would be like stereotyping all Latinos as Communists because of some Cubans, etc. If some Catholic Irish extremists commit acts of terrorism against Protestant Pro-British communities, should we “label” all Catholics as “terrorists”? Of course not.. same thing applies to Muslims. There are millions of Muslim Americans who are proud to be US citizens serving America as doctors, engineers, businessmen, clerks, laborers, community activists, etc. Why should these proud and peace-loving American Muslims not have aspirations to be the president of their country? Colen Powell in his recent statement said it perfectly about such prejudice against American Muslims. Such racism has no place in today’s America, and only echos our bitter past when we treated fellow Americans with extreme prejudice just because they were Blacks, Native Americans, Catholics, Japanese, women, etc. Ignorance and fear breeds hatred, and there are some who thrive on such, manipulating the weak to ensure their power grip.

  • 36 Falon // Oct 31, 2008 at 5:37 pm

    KATE,

You’re incorrect despite your “expertise”. His name is African, though I’m not positive that it is Swahili. What I am certain of is that it is a form of the Hebrew name Baruch! It is NOT Arabic. If it was, though, does that really matter???

  • 43 Lauren // Nov 5, 2008 at 7:56 pm

I don’t think any of this argument about meaning in Obama’s name is very fair without also analyzing the meaning in John McCain’s name. I’m of Scotch/Irish heritage and it is well known that the prefix Mc or Mac means “son of”, so McCain means “son of Cain”. Now where have I heard the name Cain before? Oh yes, the Holy Bible. Since this forum allows Wikipedia as a viable source I can quote that “Cain, the first murderer, is sometimes seen as a progenitor of evil.”

So I guess you want to judge people based on a name you can either choose Barack “Bent and Twisted” or John “Son of the First Murderer and the Beginning of Evil” The choice is all yours people.

  • 44 hotoffthepress2 // Nov 5, 2008 at 8:15 pm

Lauren — Who cares? The election is over, and McCain wasn’t the one anyone in their right mind was worried about.

  • 45 Kurt // Nov 9, 2008 at 3:46 am

Lauren — actually, the surname McCain can be traced back to McIain, which in turn is a modernization of the name McEóin. Since Eóin is the Gaelic form of John, his name really means “John, son of John.” Now if you’re going to go try and look up some demonized etymology for the name John, good luck, because it comes from a Hebrew name meaning “Yahweh is gracious”.

Now I do not feel that either McCain or Obama can be defined by their name alone. Beliefs, intentions, accomplishments, and character all come into play. That so many people are choosing to judge the now President-Elect Obama or sway others based only on his name is simply foolish. This is simply a manifestation of identity politics: a method by which political parties and campaigns get us to ignore the critical issues when they know they have a losing hand. We need to stop playing right into the politicians’ hands and start to think for ourselves.

  • 46 Angela // Nov 16, 2008 at 4:39 pm

Read this article to see what the Japanese think of Obama. Of course, you’ll probably just say the Japanese are paranoid.

This is a message to all you lefties who are coming on here and running your mouths…

It really amazes me how dumb and brainwashed so many people have become by watching all the b.s. spewed out by the extreme-left media. None of these Obama worshippers have any comeback to any criticism by the political right (or middle, or any people with a brain), except for “you are racist”. Really? How about, I am not a Communist, maybe that’s why I don’t like Obama. Or maybe, I don’t want someone who campaigns on a false platform of hope and “change” (then turns around after he is elected and selects many of the liberal left old guard to his cabinet, wow, what a big “change”) as my President. Or maybe I just plain don’t like the guy because I think he is deceptive and used alot of meaningless feel good words, the liberal media’s support, and the race card to persuade an overwhelmingly number of ignorant people to head out in droves and vote for him. Maybe that’s why. I don’t care what color he is, and sadly, if he was just another white guy, neither would anyone else.
So what is your defense now? You may actually have to defend his policies and actions for what they are, not just throw out words like “bigot” and “racist” to everyone who disagrees with him or doesn’t like him. Get a new tune. Maybe you all will finally understand when the day comes (and it is coming soon with the government we have in power now) that more than half of your paycheck is taken away and redistributed to a bunch of illegal immigrants (many of who have multiple fake social security numbers and collect government handouts illegally) and unemployed drug dealers because that is “fair”.
