Though never a supporter of Barack Obama, John M. Murtaugh says he admired the Democrat for a time for his ability to engage our imaginations, and especially for his ability to inspire the young once again to embrace the political system. That admiration seems to have dissolved during the last few months and cast a new light on his “politics of change.” And few can blame Murtaugh for changing his opinion of Obama.
In 1970, Murtaugh’s family was the victim of an attack by the domestic terror group known as the Weather Underground. In a must-read piece he wrote for City Journal six months ago, he outlines how the Weathermen tried to kill his family and raises questions about Obama’s judgment in befriending Bill Ayers, an unrepentant member of the Weather Underground who helped him launch his political career and now lives in the same Chicago neighborhood as Obama.
Murtaugh’s first-hand account of being attacked by Obama’s friend is available here: Fire in the Night.
