Though my Oklahoma Sooners lost to Texas, 45-35, as explained in this post, 17th-ranked Oklahoma State — my alma mater — shocked the #3 Missouri Tigers, 28-23, during Saturday night action in Columbia, Mo.
Despite entering the game a decided favorite, Missouri struggled to find the right formula to defeat the boys from Stillwater — a team they’ve battled into overtime during three of their previous six meetings.
Quarterback Chase Daniels, a front-runner for the Heisman Trophy along with Oklahoma QB Sam Bradford, found himself competing for best-on-the-field QB honors with Oklahoma State’s Zac Robinson.
With 4:27 to go in the fourth quarter, the score was 28-23 in favor of the Cowboys after a quick Tigers score.
With field position at their own 40 after the kickoff, the Cowboys picked up 12 yards on a pass play to runing back Kendall Hunter on the first play after it appeared Robinson would be sacked.
Operating from the Missouri 48, Oklahoma State’s next play resulted in no gain. Second and 10 .
An incomplete pass over the middle brought up third down with three minutes to go. A pass to his third-option receiver picked up only two yards, resulting in the Cowboys having to punt the ball back to Missouri at the 2:46 mark.
Cowboys punter Matt Fodge shanked his effort, putting the Tigers in good field position at their own 35.
Three Missouri plays and a 15-yard personal foul penalty against the Cowboys followed before Daniels threw an interception to Cowboys defensive back Patrick Lavine.
With less than two minutes to go — following the obligatory video review of the interception, of course — the Cowboys took possession and merely had to run out the clock. 101 seconds to go.
And they did it! My hat’s off to the Cowboys and Coach Mike Gundy. GO POKES!
