Utah Ranked Above Oklahoma State in BCS?

November 2nd, 2008 · 14 Comments

I’ve been so busy writing about politics during the past few weeks that I haven’t had time to cover college football much.  Tonight, however, I had to share my disgust with the latest BCS rankings.  Somehow, those rankings place the Utah Utes above my Oklahoma State Cowboys.  My question is, “How?”

A comparison of the two schools’ programs reveals differences as stark as those between John McCain and Barack Obama, which I highlighted in a post earlier today.  For example:

  • Oklahoma State competes in the Big XII Conference South Division — which, by the way, has dominated the Top 10 for most of the 2008 season — and has already played a #1 team (28-24 loss to the Texas Longhorns) and a #3 team (28-23 win over the Missouri Tigers).  To boot, they must still face ranked opponents — #2 Texas Tech Red Raiders and #6 Oklahoma Sooners — in two of their final three regular-season games; and
  • Conversely, Utah plays in the Mountain West Conference which, as of today, has only two other ranked teams — #12 Texas Christian University and #15 Brigham Young University.  The Utes have not yet played a ranked team and, as things stand now, will not play any teams ranked higher than #12 during the remaining month of the regular season.

If you’re a coach, sportswriter or other “somebody” who casts a vote in any of the college football polls, please pay attention:  Utah doesn’t deserve a Top 10 ranking.  Perhaps they will deserve one after proving themselves against conference cellar dweller San Diego StateYeah, right!

C’mon Bob, be a man. You must not be 40! Utah is undefeated. Oklahoma State isn’t. If Oklahoma State is so good, they should win their games. The real reason to be disgusted with the latest poll is that 4 teams with losses are still ranked ahead of Utah.

Rob in Az — Utah? Come one! They haven’t play anyone. Heck, my high school team could probably beat those Utes! Ha ha.

Bob, you logic is terrible. To this point, head to head I will take Utah’s schedule over OSU’s. The likes of Wash St. Miss St. Houston, Troy. OSU is 1-1 against Big 12 teams with a winning record. The Missouri win was impressive, but has lost some luster as Missouri has fallen off the map. Utah’s win over Michigan obviously isn’t as sexy as it once was, but the Oregon State win is still impressive. Go ahead and win out, then we will talk, but until then deal with it. Utah belongs ahead of OSU right now.

Dan — “You logic” is worse. My high school in Oklahoma had a chance to play in the Mountain West, but turned it down so as not to be labeled as having too much of a “cream puff” schedule. (just kidding). As for OSU’s losses, I think you’re looking at the world through clouded lenses. Ask anyone in the country — outside of Utah, that is — which team has the tougher schedule, and you’ll find my Cowboys garner the most votes, hands down. Good try, though!

When Utah loses to TCU , Oaklahoma state will be ranked above Utah and my team ( Americas Team ) will be right on the heals of the Cowboys , go Bronco’s!

Lyndon Reynolds — Pardon my ignorance, but who are the Broncos? Not Boise State, I hope. Please tell me I’m wrong!

    hotffthepress:

you say ask “ask anyone in the country – outside of Utah” who has a tougher schedule, did you happen to miss the part that the part that Rob in AZ (signifying ARIZONA) agrees that Utah should be ranked higher. I live in California and agree with Dan.

Ok State has a great team and deserves a great ranking, but until Utah loses, there is a good argument for why they should be ranked higher than Ok State. The polls are not based in logic (but then, neither are your arguments, so its a wash). If logic prevailed, Utah (which beat Oregon State) should be ranked ahead of USC (which lost to Oregon State). Rankings are a joke and a playoff needs to be implemented.

Okay, Jake, I should have said, “Ask anyone who’s not “in the tank” for Utah. As for the rest of your comment, I agree that a playoff system would be great. Thanks for stopping by!

Bob, lay off my proof reading. The reality is a playoff is the only way to decide this thing. Until then, those outside the BIG 12 tank, don’t feel that OSU’s body of work is better than Utah’s. I tend to agree with them, but would much rather see it decided on the field.

Dan — Looks like you and Lyndon must be related. If Utah make it into a respectable post-season bowl game, I’d be happy to see my Cowboys stomp your Utes. Take care!

Ok, First off, Your elitism reeks of old man cologne….Ok State is Great but the Utes Are not a “Little School” they have an attendance in the 30000 range I believe. Its in a city thats Television Market is in the 30 range among largest TV markets in the U.S… We play in a bigger market then you little corn huskers play in. Our conference isnt so little if you lower your nose a little bit and WATCH. Also, Need I remind you of an Urban Meyer coached Utah team that was the VERY FIRST BCS BUST before they changed the rules to let lesser BCS foes In (I.E. Boise, Hawaii). We have been there done that already and we deserve RESPECT. 2004 fiesta bowl ring any bells old fella?

  • 12 hotoffthepress2 // Nov 3, 2008 at 9:23 pm

Frenchie — Your comment has three factual holes in it:

  • (1) You called my Oklahoma State University team the “Cornhuskers” instead of Cowboys. The Cornhuskers are in Nebraska, not Oklahoma;
  • (2) According to the latest DMA Ranking, the Salt Lake City market ranks #33 with 919,390 households while the Oklahoma City market ranks #45 with 687,300; and
  • 3. My Oklahoma State Cowboys did not play in the 2004 Fiesta Bowl; the Oklahoma Sooners did.
  • Other than those key points, you were right on target.

  • 13 FrenchKanuck // Nov 3, 2008 at 10:23 pm

I was never saying that OK State played in the Fiesta Bowl. READ for a change buddy,I was referring to the game for a different purpose. Did you attend a college? I also am wondering how I was wrong on the Market Size of Salt Lake, Im exactly right…What point you trying to make there? You just listed what I wrote?? ya weirdo…?Lastly, I use Corn husker to describe all Midwesterners, My bad though on that and that only.

LMAO! And I thought only politics and religion could start a verbal brawl! I’ll tell y’all what:

-my two teams — Iowa and Colorado — suck, and don’t belong in the rankings. Oh…they ain’t there. Good. Perhaps they can meet in the Dow Chemical Toilet Bowl in someplace fitting, but I digress…
    - the BCS rankings are frequently BS rankings; the real deal could be settled with a college playoff among the Top 10, IMHO. Somebody…ANYBODY…tell me the last time a College Top Ten football ranking came out that EVERYONE AGREED WITH?
    - since Texas Tech whupped Texas, shouldn’t they be #1? Not according to Alabama and Penn State fans. And I’m sure there’d be arguments from other Top Tenners.
    - BCS Bowl Committee: I vote for OSU and Utah to square off in ANY Bowl! Let’s settle it on the field! EwRAHHH!
