Obama Message to Allies: ‘You Can’t Trust Me’

November 9th, 2008 · 3 Comments

President-elect Obama

If an Associated Press report published early today is accurate, President-elect Barack Obama has sent a clear and disturbing message to U.S. allies around the world:  “You can’t trust me.”

The report cites Obama foreign policy adviser Denis McDonough as saying Obama did not make a commitment to Polish President Lech Kaczynski regarding installation of a multi-billion-dollar missile defense system in his former Soviet-bloc nation.  His words, however, fly in the face of those from President Kaczynski who said the soon-to-be-44th president told him the missile defense project would continue.

Such a foreign policy flip-flop must sound like music to the ears of Russian President Dmitry Medvedev and Prime MInister Vladimir Putin.  According to a Reuters report, a Russian foreign ministry official said Moscow would not carry out a threat to deploy tactical missiles near Poland if Washington scrapped its plans to deploy its missile systems in Europe.

We all know the Russians — especially Putin — are above reproach?  Trustworthy?  Honest?  Not according to one leader of Russia’s opposition party.  In an AP video report (above right) published earlier this week, Garry Kasparov says Medvedev and Putin represent a move in the wrong direction for the former Soviet nation.

Sounds a lot like what conservatives in this country have been saying about Obama:  “You can’t trust him.”

Apparently the Europeans and those elsewhere are in for a shock: that what Barack Obama says is operative only in the space and time in which he said it.

Why don’t you just add an “h” between the “t” and “y” in your last name? You’re pretty clearly on a witchhunt…

Cheryl — You are sooo creative! I hope you find a productive outlet for it someday.
