“I do not believe at this point in time that there are any proposals being made to reinstate the moratoria across the board,” said House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-Md.) in response to a reporter’s question about his plans regarding a quarter-century-old ban on offshore oil and gas drilling that was lifted last year.
Hoyer’s statement, made during an appearance at the National Press Club this afternoon, seemed to be received favorably by representatives of the oil and gas industry.
“We believe the position outlined to news reporters by House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer -– that the Democratic leadership would not seek to re-impose the ban on oil and natural gas leasing in federal waters –- is the right approach,” said Jack Gerard, American Petroleum Institute president and CEO. “The American public has made clear its strong support for increased access to untapped domestic oil and natural gas resources.”
In a statement received by e-mail this afternoon, Gerard cited recent polls reflecting the fact that two-thirds of Americans said they support offshore drilling. He also offered what amounts to a businesslike plea for bipartisanship and cooperation on all matters related to the nation’s energy future.
“Neither Congress nor the next administration should set unreasonable, arbitrary limits on leasing because such restrictions could remove some of the nation’s most promising oil and natural gas prospects for development, and the industry has proven it can develop these resources in an environmentally safe manner,” Gerard said.
“The industry stands ready to help put America’s vast energy resources to good use to strengthen our nation’s economy and energy security, generate billions of dollars for the benefit of our federal and state treasuries and provide good jobs for Americans across the country.”
As a former political campaign manager and longtime public relations professional (a.k.a., “spin doctor”), I become skeptical any time I hear a politician use the words, “at this point in time.” Why? Because it leaves the door open for things to change — sometimes sooner than some folks would like.

Classic Democrapic “bait and switch”: Hoyer knows the Dems plan to try and overturn the lifting of the ban in the 2009 session. Lying sack of crap, like so many Democraps in Congress.
