College football fans in Texas appear to be suffering from severe cases of what might best be described as “Irritable Bowl Syndrome,” an affliction caused by a third-place finish in the latest BCS rankings.
Upset over the fact that their beloved Longhorns finished out of the running for a chance to play in the BCS Championship Jan. 8 in Miami, fans of the Texas Longhorns have been unable to digest the fact that the #1 Oklahoma Sooners and #2 Florida Gators will play in the national championship game in place of their boys in burnt orange. In addition, they’re upset about the “consolation prize” — a chance to play #10 Ohio State in the Fiesta Bowl.
Symptoms of the illness began appearing after the much-hated rival Oklahoma Sooners delivered a decisive 61-41 victory over in-state foe Oklahoma State two weeks ago. They became more evident and began to spread after the team from Norman pummeled the Missouri Tigers, 62-21, in the Big 12 Championship Saturday at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City.
After the latest BCS rankings were released late Sunday afternoon, municipal officials across the Lone Star State began reporting widespread water shortages, most likely the result of UT fans making frequent trips to the bathroom to deal with the side effects of the pigskin-related digestive disorder.
Though I’m a huge fan of Bob Stoops’ Oklahoma Sooners, I hate to see anyone suffer from such an ailment caused by factors beyond their control. Therefore, I offer some unprofessional sports medicine advice — call it a prescription if you like — in the form of a dose of reality for devotees of the Mack Brown-coached team, courtesy of a reader whose comment appeared in the Wichita Falls Times-Record News Dec. 3:
I know the Longhorn fan base feels cheated, but the BCS picked the right team and here is why: Texas beat OU 45-35 and we say good victory for you, but one game does not make a season.
Get well soon, Longhorns! We’ll see you next year in Dallas!

The comment is right, one game does not make a season, but neither does 5 games for that matter (the magical 60+ points in a row). The argument made by Texas fans is very valid, as represented by the fact that Bob Stoops must keep explaining why his team deserved to go to the Big XII championship game and why his team deserves to play for the BCS national championship.
A true fan, whether burnt orange or any other color, should not argue that it is “unfair” that oklahoma gets to play for the championship, because they met the requirements. But a true fan should argue for a better system; and the lack of even a good system is represented by years of turmoil (e.g. USC AP National champions in 2003, Auburn 2004). This year’s Longhorns are just offering another example for the need of a better system.
I’m sure any irritable bowl syndrome will be cured the evening of January 8, when the ‘Horns will be on their third day of celebrating their win over Ohio State, and Big Game Bob will be trying to explain why he lost his fifth BCS game in a row.
