I’ve decided to give the subject of obesity additional weight on this blog by highlighting Andrew Ferguson’s must-read piece, The Politics of Fat, that appears in the Jan. 5, 2009, edition of Weekly Standard.
Ferguson uses the first two paragraphs of his article to provide an overview of the anti-obesity legislation — which, I believe, is ripe with slippery-slope potential — being pushed by New York Gov. David Patterson:
On December 15, the city council of Binghamton, New York–every member a proud progressive–unanimously passed an ordinance making it a crime to discriminate against fat people. The next day, David Paterson, the famously progressive governor of New York, proposed a special “fat tax” on soda pop because soda pop makes people fat.
When it comes to obesity, the authorities in New York have put their citizens on notice: We will get you coming and going.
I don’t want to give away the whole thing through copy-and-past blogging, so I’ll end this brief post by encouraging you to check out Ferguson’s piece and share it with your friends.
