Despite media reports of controversy over Barack Obama’s selection of Pastor Rick Warren to give the prayer at today’s inauguration, the average American seems to be either unaware of the selection or to approve.
According to survey results released Monday by Gallup, Warren isn’t nearly as unpopular as many in the mainstream news media and those who opposed Warren’s support of the controversial California’s controversial Proposition 8 might have Americans believe:
- Fifty-two percent of Americans say they don’t know enough about the decision to have an opinion either way; and
- Among Americans who do have an opinion, those who approve outweigh those who disapprove 39% to 9%.
Do not, however, expect media coverage of the inauguration — and, more specifically, coverage of the invocation by Warren — to accurately reflect this public sentiment.

But the whole idea here is that the media and those 9% really, really dislike all Warren stands for, and they would really like the American people to dislike his views also. And by the fact that 52% are denying having an opinion, I conclude the media is winning at this point.
