Biotech Firm Offers ‘Mental Stimulus Package’

February 24th, 2009 · No Comments

Quincy Bioscience President Mark Underwood is so concerned about the declining quality of memory among federal government officials that he is offering free bottles of a brain-enhancing supplement to any member of Congress or official in the incoming administration who has forgotten to pay taxes within the last 10 years.

Though Underwood describes the supplement Prevagen® as a “mental stimulus package” in a company news release today, it appears as if the Madison, Wisc., biotech company’s product might offer something more — a cure for Partzheimer’s.

Also known as “Convenient Memory-Loss Syndrome,” Partzheimer’s is a rare form of memory loss that affects those in the public spotlight — politicians, movie stars and high-profile corporate executives — more often than any other group.  Symptoms show up most often when individuals afflicted with the disease are speaking under oath. Unfortunately, the disease often goes undiagnosed and untreated for years.

During the past three years, the cases of several Partzheimer’s victimes have been outlined in this blog.  Below, Underwood offers a list of other likely victims whom, he believes, might have been helped by his product:

  • REP. CHARLES RANGEL — Back in September, Rangel, Chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee, (the committee in charge of writing tax policy for the entire nation), forgot to pay taxes on $75,000 income he received from his rental property in the Dominican Republic.
  • TOM DASCHLE — Daschle, the former senator from South Dakota, was chosen to head the Health and Human Services Department but had to withdraw Feb. 3 over his failure to pay 128 thousand dollars in taxes in the last two years.
  • NANCY KILLEFER — Killefer, former Assistant Treasury Secretary under Bill Clinton, was forced to withdraw after President Obama nominated her for the post of Chief Performance Officer when it became known that she had failed for a year and a half to pay employment taxes on household help.
  • TREASURY SECRETARY TIM GEITHNER — Tim Geithner failed to pay $34,000 in taxes for Social Security and Medicare when he was a senior official at the International Monetary Fund from 2001 to 2003.

“Our goal is to spare our elected and unelected officials in Washington the embarrassment that failing memory often brings,” said Underwood.

Though I have no commercial interest in Underwood’s product, I do support his company’s efforts to cure Partzheimer’s.  I hope you do, too.
