SET YOUR PHASER ON STUNNED! Actor William Shatner hopes to become Canada’s next prime minister, according to a Global National video report that appeared yesterday on the web site of the Vancouver Sun newspaper.
Though this news about Shatner, the actor who rose to fame during the late ’60s for his role as Captain James T. Kirk on the science fiction television series and film franchise, “Star Trek,” has yet to receive any attention in the United States, I suspect it will soon become fodder for late night comedians, political pundits, parody producers and bloggers — including yours truly — soon.
After all, who can resist the opportunity to assess Shatner’s albeit mostly-fictitious qualifications with those of his opponents:
- His military experience includes service as commander of the U.S.S. Enterprise and leading his troops to places where no man had gone before (see Star Trek);
- His legal experience includes several years as an attorney at prominent law firms (see The Practice and Boston Legal);
- His homeland security experience includes seven years as a first responder (see Rescue 911); and
- His negotiating skills have been visible for years via his leading-man appearances in advertising spots for Priceline.
Aside from the list of pseudo-qualifications highlighted above and many more not shown, the prospect of a political convention attracting Shatner fans (a.k.a., “Trekkies”) offers more than most journalists, pundits and other followers of popular culture will be able to resist.

Very interesting. I was wondering what he would do now that Boston Legal is over. I did not realize he was Canadian.
Shatner could never get away from the character of Kirk, I don’t think he was taken seriously as an actor for many years. However, he is a very intelligent man, highly prolific and popular writer, and I believe an over all good person.
Not sure he should go into politics though, ha.

Hey, he’s a good speaker with a unique style, and after all, that’s all it takes these days to be qualified. :) I still remain a fan.

LOL.
Though a fan of the original Star Trek, I can’t see William Shatner as an effective political leader.

I think his best qualification is that he is not a lawyer, though he plays one.
