Fifty years ago, Mattel introduced a new doll to the world at the New York Toy Fair. While that’s a big deal for the toymaker (see this news release for proof), a Sky News report has me wondering about the implications of a Barbie® doll sporting tattoos.
According to Sky News, a new Barbie® doll known as “Totally Stylin’ Tattoos Barbie®” comes with a set of body art stickers that can be placed anywhere on her body, including the lower back.
When a doll’s owner — presumably a young girl, but possibly a doll collector or someone else — affixes a large sticker to the center of her doll’s lower back, she will have created a new doll, “Tramp Stamp Barbie®.” Then what?
- Will Ken think differently of Barbie®?
- Will Barbie®’s molded-plastic skin begin to sag and cause her tattoo(s) to become unsightly?
- If Barbie® comes to regret having gotten her tattoo(s), will she have to go back to the toy factory to have them removed?

What was the line in Wedding Crashers about women with tatoos on the lower back? Do you think Ken knows that truth that Owen Wilson and Vince Vaughn knew in that movie?

It’s nice to see a child with innocense these days, and it’s sad to see trashy ho five-year olds. The amount of marketing to children that raise them up to an age before they should be that age upsets me.

When I was a kid in the early 90’s I had a barbie that came with temporary tattoos. I’m twenty five now and I don’t have any real tattoos. Kids have been using temporary tattoos for decades, I had even gotten them out of cereal boxes. When a child plays with a toy they play with it in a child-like way. I don’t remember thinking ‘ok barbie we’re going down to the tattoo parlor!’
As long as they arn’t watching crap like MTV that is letting them know what tattoo parlors and tramp stamps are then they should be fine playing with the doll.
